Jerry Hammett

EDMOND — Jerry Hammett, 71, of Edmond, Okla. passed away on September 9, 2012.

Jerry graduated from the University of Oklahoma with a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering and a commission as a 2nd Lt. in the United States Air Force. He served two tours in Vietnam as a Radar Navigator in B 52’s. There were no accolades and no parades when he returned home; there was just the knowledge that he served his country well. He was awarded eight Air Medals, the Distinguished Flying Cross and the Vietnamese Cross of Valor. During his time in the Air Force, he received his MSEE at the Air Force Institute of Technology. He retired from the Air Force after 21 years of service.

He was preceded in death by his oldest son, Christopher; his parents, Tom and Helen; his aunt, Dodie; and his very special mother-in-law, Martha Johnson.

He is survived by his best friend and wife of 51 years, Martha; his son, Dr. Kelly Hammett, wife Lori, and his two grandchildren, Taylor and Chase. He is also survived by his brother, Jim and wife Bonnie of Arizona. Other survivors include his two sisters-in-law, Sarah Chastain, and Paula Petersen and Paula’s husband Mike; cousin Boyd Baker; nephew Brian Petersen, wife Felicia, and their daughter Ally; nephew Brandon Petersen, wife Amy, and their three sons Max, Jake, and Reed; as well as his two trusted companions, Freedom and Liberty.

A funeral service for Jerry was 10 a.m. Wednesday, September 26, 2012 at the Memorial Park Cemetery Historic Chapel followed by a committal service at Memorial Park Cemetery, 13400 N. Kelley Ave., Oklahoma City.
