The Edmond Sun
Dale Clifford Meredith, 85, of Edmond, Okla., passed away peacefully in his sleep, at home, on the morning of May 30, 2013. He was born near Eureka, Kan., in 1927. The doctor crossed a flooding river on horseback just to deliver him.
Dale graduated high school in 1945 and promptly hitchhiked out to California to join the Marines, only to find the war ended when he finished boot camp. He served for over a year in Hawaii before returning to Eureka to marry Neva in 1949, a union that lasted 64 years.
Dale began studying at Kansas University in Lawrence and spent two years at Kansas State Teachers College in Emporia, but he heard the oilfield calling. He began working for Phillips Petroleum Co. in Greenwood County, Kan., in 1951, and moved with Neva and their three children to Shidler, Okla., in 1963 and then to Ponca City, Okla. in 1967. He was a scout leader in Eureka, then Shidler, providing camping and other scouting experiences to his son’s troop.
Dale was a dedicated Toastmaster for many years, winning recognition for his humorous speeches and receiving the first annual Dedicated Toastmaster Service Award. Dale and Neva relocated to Edmond, Okla., in 1978. Eight years later, Dale retired, ending 35 years of service to Phillips.
In retirement Dale and Neva traveled the country, tracing their ancestors, visiting relatives and taking their grandchildren on frequent trips back to the farm in Kansas. When he was home, Dale kept himself busy with daily walks, dominoes and pinochle games, and fixing bikes for the neighborhood kids. He went to the gym almost daily for 25 years, where until just last March he regularly out-lifted buddies a quarter his age. He touched many lives throughout his 85 years. He will be missed by all of them – his family, his friends, and his neighbors.
He is survived, and still deeply loved, by his wife, Neva McCammon Meredith of Edmond; his son, Kyle, of Silver City, N.M.; his daughters Jeri Meredith and Dena Pinson of Edmond; his grandchildren Zach, Zane, Kristine and Sam Pinson; his sisters Dorothy Roberson of Kalispell, Mont.; Judy Litz of Salida, Colo.; Nancy Stuber of Eureka, Kan.; and Teresa Kosel of Colorado Springs, Colo.
He was preceded in death by his parents, Creet and Adelia Lehman Meredith, his brother Roger Meredith, and his sister Marion Whiles.
Services were 2 p.m. Monday, June 3, 2013 at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, OK, followed by interment in Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond.
