Gladys J. Jones, age 92, passed away peacefully at her home on December 14, 2013. Gladys was born November 11, 1921 to May Rinehart Dabbs and Ralph Dabbs in Guthrie, Okla. She was raised in Meridian, Okla., where she met her husband William O. Jones, Sr. They resided in Guthrie until 1969 at which time they moved to Edmond, Okla. They had three children: William (Bill), Wayne and Alice.
Gladys worked for the City of Guthrie from 1966 until she retired in 1983. At that time, she began her second career by starting an in home daycare. She became “Grandma” to many children, as well as their families. She loved all of the children that she watched, but in later years she forged a great bond with several Nigerian families and their children.
Gladys was also known by many to be an excellent cook. She loved to cook and everyone loved her cooking! Many of the children were known to want to go to “Grandma’s” to eat, which made her extremely proud.
She and her husband were great fans of bluegrass music and spent much of their time traveling to bluegrass festivals. She had a passion for bluegrass and gospel music, and loved to watch basketball, football, and baseball on TV.
She was preceded in death by her husband, William O. Jones, Sr.; her parents, May and Ralph Dabbs; and her brother, Ralph Dabbs, Jr.
She is survived by her son William (Bill) Jones, Jr. and wife Beverly of Harrah, Okla.; her son Wayne Jones of Edmond, and her daughter Alice Hayes and husband Curtis of Oklahoma City, Okla.; grandchildren Randi Tennant (Paul) of Harrah,; Brandi English of Harrah; Craig Jones (Kristi) of Edmond; Chad Jones (Jeanette) of Edmond; Katherine Jones (Nick) of Chandler, Okla.; and Taylor Hayes of Oklahoma City; nine great grandchildren and many nieces and nephews.
The family thanks the staff of Excell Hospice and Visiting Angels of Edmond. She looked forward to each and every one of their visits.
A memorial service will be 2 p.m. Friday, December 20, 2013 at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly, Edmond, OK. A private interment will be at a later date at Summit View Cemetery, Guthrie, OK.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests that donations be made in her name to St. Jude’s Children’s Hospital or Infant Crisis Services, Oklahoma City, OK.
