Shirley Burnett Goin

EDMOND —     Shirley Mae (Burnett) Goin, 79, passed from this life on January 10, 2014 in Edmond, Okla. She was born September 29, 1934 to Roy “Slim” and Pauline (Lance) Burnett in Burkburnett, Texas. She graduated from Ryan High School in 1952 and later received secretarial training in Fort Worth, Texas.

Shirley married Franklin “Don” Goin July 19, 1952, living in Corpus Christ while he was in the Navy.  In 1954 the couple moved to Waurika, Okla. where they raised their four children.  Shirley became a Christian in her early twenties and began a life of faithful service to the Lord, teaching children’s and Ladies’ Bible class, home Bible studies and working in the Benevolence ministry while attending the Waurika Church of Christ.

She was a gracious hostess to a countless number of people throughout the years, many of whom enjoyed her pecan or cream pies, banana nut cakes, or chocolate chip cookies.  During those years Shirley worked at Durrett and Bartling Insurance Agencies.  The couple moved to Duncan, Okla. in 1987 and to Edmond in 2001, where they were members of Memorial Road Church of Christ. Shirley always had a special love for children, at times providing childcare in her home.  She had many interests throughout life such as tole painting, gardening, mission trips and traveling, exercising, collecting Kewpie dolls, and chocolate!

Her greatest joy was family. She was the ultimate grandmother to her five grandchildren, investing time and energy in making memories with and for them.  Shirley embodied characteristics of the virtuous woman described in Proverbs 31.  She had a gentle spirit and a servant heart – traits evident even as she battled Alzheimer’s through the last years of her life.   She and Don celebrated 60 years of marriage before his death in August 2012.

She also was preceded in death by her parents; sister Sue Burnett, of Comanche, Okla., and brother Harold “Sonny” Charles of Ringling, Okla.

She is survived by her sons Donald  “Don” Goin (Julie) of Magnolia, Ark., David Goin (Sandy) of Edmond, and Jim Goin (Judy) of Edmond; daughter, Sharon Goin Steele (Charlie) of Flower Mound, Texas; brother Roy Bartling of Waurika; sisters Janice Strader of Ardmore, Okla., Deanna Kennedy of Lone Grove, Okla., and Sheila Harbert of Moriarti, N.M.; grandchildren Jana McGilvray and husband Daniel of Fort Worth, Leslie Chronister and husband Leith of Tulsa, Okla., Clay Goin and wife Jennifer of Conway, Ark., Heath Steele and wife Taylor and Sean Steele of Edmond, and one great-granddaughter, Brynley McGilvray of Fort Worth.

We celebrate her life on this earth and passing into her eternal home.

Family visitation was Monday, January 13, 6-8 p.m. at Baggerley Funeral Home in Edmond.

Funeral service is Tuesday, January 14, 2014, 2 p.m. at Memorial Road Church of Christ in Edmond.

Memorials may be made to the Alzheimer’s Association, 2123 N. Classen Blvd., OKC, 73106.
