EDMOND —
V. J. Callaway, 81, of Edmond, Okla., was born September 16, 1931 in Harrison County, Texas, to John and Vera Callaway. He died in Edmond on October 22, 2012.
V.J. relished life, especially life outdoors. From fishing, to quail hunting, to countless rounds of golf, he could always be found outside. V.J. loved sports and was athletic himself. In college, he was able to play baseball, basketball and football, even playing for the Far East Air Force football and baseball teams in Tokyo, Japan during the Korean Conflict. He was also a licensed umpire during that time. V. J. also played Texas Fast Pitch Softball. Later he coached Little League Baseball while his son, Craig, was growing up and was very proud of taking the Odessa, Texas team to State. More recently he was able to share his passion and expertise in the game of golf through serving as a marshal at several local courses including River Oaks Country Club, Fairfax Golf Club, Oak Tree Men’s Club and Silverhorn Golf Club.
Throughout his entire life, V.J. loved traveling, was full of life and was never short on topics of conversation. V. J.’s career with Sun Oil spanned his entire working years from 1952 until he retired in 1987.
Loyalty is a word that best describes V.J., not only in his professional life, but also in his spiritual life. He and Betty were always involved in churches everywhere they lived: in Judson, Longview, Odessa, Freer and Fort Worth,Texas; McComb, Miss.; Delhi and Shreveport, La.; Tulsa, Okla. and Edmond. V. J. loved the Lord above all else; and he loved his family deeply, especially his wife and son. He will be missed.
V. J. is survived by his wife of 62 years, Betty; his son Craig Callaway, and many relatives and friends.
A come-and-go visitation was Wednesday at Crawford Family Funeral Service, 610 NW 178th Street, Edmond. Services celebrating V. J.’s life were 10 a.m. Thursday, October 25, 2012 at Edmond’s First Baptist Church under the direction of Crawford Family Funeral Service. Interment followed at Gracelawn Cemetery, Edmond.
