EDMOND —
Edward Lee Berry, 88, was born November 5, 1924, in Oklahoma City, Okla. to Dr. Cecil E. and Clara Campbell Berry. He passed away peacefully at home in Edmond, Okla., on March 9, 2013.
A graduate of Miami High School, Miami, Okla., he attended Phillips University in Enid, where he was president of both the marching band and Phi Mu Alpha Sinfonia honorary music fraternity. Ed attained degrees in music, school administration, and educational psychology. He began his career as an educator when he taught music, directing the choir and band as a part of the original staff at Southeast High School in Oklahoma City. He became a counselor, assistant principal, then principal, serving at John Marshall, Eisenhower, Classen, and Douglass High Schools in Oklahoma City, and at Central Mid-High in Edmond. He served as president of the Cooperative Council for School Administrators for the state of Oklahoma in 1980-1981.
In addition to his public school positions, he was an instrumentalist and tenor soloist and his career as a minister of music spanned decades. He served at Penn Avenue Christian Church, at Village Christian, Oklahoma City and First Christian Edmond. After retiring, he filled interim positions as choir director at First Christian, Oklahoma City, St. Mary’s Episcopal and New Covenant United Methodist in Edmond, and First Christian in Guthrie. An active member of First Christian Church in Edmond for 38 years, he was an Elder, Elder Emeritus, had served as chairman of the Board of Elders, chairman of the Worship Ministry, Personnel Committee member, and was a Stephen minister.
Ed proudly served his country as a U. S. Marine in World War II. He was a lifelong member of Lions Club International, in the Capital Hill, Village, Downtown, and Edmond chapters, serving as president of clubs three times.
After an early retirement from the education field n 1981, Ed began his real estate career, selling homes and commercial properties. He and his wife, Judy, established Berry Company Real Estate; he also managed residential properties for over 25 years, until 2006.
He was preceded in death by his parents, sister and brother-in-law Donna and Dr. L. C. Barnes; sister Jane Bell, brother Doyce Berry, daughter Melodie Berry, and nephew Kyle McCulloh.
Ed is survived by his loving wife of 35 years, Judy, of the home; son Kevin and granddaughters Erica and Kristen Berry of Choctaw, Okla.; and brother-in-law Dr. Robert Bell of Granbury, Texas. He also leaves behind sisters-in-law Susan Mills and Claire Sanger; nieces Donna Kay Barnes, Karin Newell, Anne Cummings, Nonie Berry, Rosie Mizell, Cheryl Dawn Blaylock and Dr. Emily Hollingsworth; and nephews Lynn Barnes, Michael Berry, Jim Bell, Jerry Bell, Joe Bell, and Dr. Stephen McCulloh, as well as a multitude of wonderful friends.
Ed will be remembered as an enthusiastic and encouraging friend, a mentor, a wonderful husband, brother, uncle, father, and grandfather. Those who loved and admired him will recall his kindness, positive attitude, youthful spirit, and generosity. His smile and vibrant personality will be greatly missed by all whose lives he touched.
A memorial service to celebrate Ed’s life will be 11 a.m. Thursday, March 21, at First Christian Church, Edmond, 2nd and Boulevard, Edmond.
