Robert James Guyer

EDMOND —     Robert “Bob” James Guyer, 95, of Edmond, Okla., passed away September 11, 2013. He was born January 14, 1918 in Arcadia, Okla. to Robert Grant and Anna Francis Guyer and grew up in the Arcadia area.  Bob and his mother relocated to Edmond, Okla. where he met the love of his life, Marcella Evitts.  Two weeks after the attack on Pearl Harbor, the two lovebirds were married on December 21, 1941 and began a loving 71 years of marriage.

Due to the events at the time, Bob enlisted in the U.S. Army but failed his physical due to a knee injury from an earlier age.  Not to be kept from being an active participant in the war effort, he (and Marcella) worked at Tinker AFB repairing B-17 and B-24 Bombers also fitting the B-29 Bombers for combat.  He was always able to interject humor at any time, although sometimes he didn’t have to try.  A fine example of this is the fact that, at 6’6”, his job was to connect the wiring in the tail-gunner turret (a job usually reserved for much shorter people) and would often draw a crowd for its entertainment value.

After the war, Bob and Marcella gave birth to their first child, Marcena (Marcy), on October 20, 1947 and then twins, Tim and Kim on July 21, 1954.

Bob worked most of his career in the engineering department for KWTV Channel 9.  While there, he was part of the team that designed and built the first remote broadcast truck in the state allowing the station to broadcast the First Baptist Church of Oklahoma City services every Sunday.  Through these years during RV trips Bob had already perfected the art of sitting and staring by a campfire or anywhere outside so, at age 65, Bob and Marcella retired to pursue their dream of living on Lake Eufaula where they sat, stared and fished until they moved back in 2006 to an Edmond senior living center to be closer to family.

Bob had one more job to do, and proudly did so.  Marcella was diagnosed with Alzheimer’s and, as you would expect from the greatest generation, he stood by her and took care of her through thick and thin.

Bob was preceded in death by his parents Robert and Anna, and his brother John Beatty (Buddy).

Survivors include his wife Marcella, daughter Marcena Pinney of Berlin, Conn., her son Corey Hamilton of Edmond, and daughter Casey Apuzzo and husband Frank of Wallingford, Conn., son Tim and Cindy Guyer of Edmond, their daughters Megan Tincker and husband Chris of Meridian, Idaho, Michelle Bratcher and husband Greg of Norman, Okla., and Carla Saulsberry and husband Mark of Midwest City, Okla., son Kim and Cathy Guyer of Edmond, their daughters Lauren VanOsdol and husband Kody of Edmond and Alysa Guyer of Oklahoma City, Okla., cousin James Linde (Buzzy) Forsythe and wife Rosalyn (Rosie) of Edmond.  Of these survivors, numerous great grandchildren were beloved by Bob as well.

The family would like to express their extreme gratitude to the doctors, RNs and CNs of the Mercy Heart Hospital for their knowledge, devotion and love conveyed in his care.

Memorial services will be 2 p.m., Saturday, September 14, 2013, at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelley, Edmond, with burial at Gracelawn Cemetery.
