EDMOND —
Boyd Ramsey, 79, of Edmond, Okla., passed away June 20, 2012. He died peacefully at his home after a long bout with early-onset Alzheimer’s. He was born May 31, 1933, in Willow, Okla., to Ethel Pearl and John Franklin Ramsey.
Boyd spent time in his youth as a share cropper, picking cotton until 1942 when his family moved to California, shortly after the Dust Bowl. He went to Clovis High School in California where, at age 17, he met the love of his life, Bea Agee. The two remained devoted to one another for 59 years until Bea passed away from lung cancer on November 30, 2010.
Boyd worked as a machinist in Los Angeles, Calif., from 1955 until 1964 when he went into the oil business with his brothers, Cecil Leon Ramsey and John Warren Ramsey. In 1968, after moving to Edmond, Boyd and Bea started the first of their successful businesses, Ramsey Fabrics. The original store eventually became several as the Ramseys became the Bernina sewing machine franchise owners for the Oklahoma City and Edmond area. Boyd managed the business from 1968 to 1998, and after 45 years, he retired and transferred the business to his son, John Ramsey.
After retirement, Boyd spent his time traveling with Bea and the pair made several trips to Europe. He was a devoted Christian and a member of the First Baptist Church in Edmond.
Boyd was preceded in death by his parents; his wife, Bernelle (Bea) Ramsey, and by his sisters and brothers, Ruth, Doris, Francis, Peggy, Lucille, Willis, Charles, John Warren, Earnest and John Edward.
Boyd is survived by his brother, Cecil Leon Ramsey; his four children, Michael Boyd, John David, Ellen Marie and Lori Diane, and his four grandchildren, John David, Emily Ann, Christopher Eldon, and Samuel Paul.
Visitation will be 8 a.m. - 9 p.m. Wednesday, June 27, 2012, at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 South Kelly, Edmond.
The funeral service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, June 28 at the First Baptist Church, 1300 East 33rd. St., Edmond.
Memorial gifts may be made to Alzheimer’s Association in lieu of flowers.
Services are under the Direction of Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond.
