Dr. John Michael Knight

EDMOND —     Dr. John Michael (Mike) Knight, 63, died on Monday, April 26, after a brief but acute illness.

    He served Central State University and the University of Central Oklahoma for 37 years. Dr. Knight’s educational experiences included completing a Bachelor of Arts degree in Psychology at Central State College in 1968, a Master of Arts degree in Psychology at Stephen F. Austin State University in 1970, and a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) degree in Psychology at the University of Oklahoma in 1974.

    Dr. Knight began his career at Central as an instructor in the School of Education, Department of Elementary Education in 1973.  He enjoyed great success in all aspects of his work as a faculty member being recommended for tenure in 1978, being promoted to the rank of associate professor in 1979 and attaining the rank of professor in 1982. Dr. Knight was selected as chair of the Department of Psychology in 1982 serving until 1984 at which time he was appointed as Acting Graduate Dean. In 1985, Dr. Knight returned to the department chair role where he served throughout the remainder of his career.

    He recently received the OPS Legacy Award at the Oklahoma Psychological Society conference. Through Dr. Knight’s contributions and accomplishments the UCO Department of Psychology increased its visibility and reputation.

    He is survived by his oldest daughter Dr. Angela Knight and her husband Greg Dines, his youngest daughter Amber Knight; grandchildren Addison Mae Hecker, Michael Maximillion Hecker, Kaizer Bury Dines; his sister Cheryl Duck and her husband John Duck; his niece Teresa Duck and nephew Ryan Duck, and many cousins.

    His chosen family included Mark Hamlin, Rob Doan, Jim Machell. To all of his family in the Psychology department at UCO, Mike was as much a part of UCO as Old North is today. If fact, for many, it is not possible to separate Mike from Old North, they were one in the same, standing above the rest as a symbol for knowledge and learning. He will be missed.

    Visitation will be Friday, and Saturday until 5 pm. at Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond.

    A memorial service will be 11 am Saturday, May 1, 2010 at the Great Hall within Evans Hall at the University of Central Oklahoma.
