EDMOND —
Oma Checotah, 97, passed away peacefully on January 1, 2013 with her family by her side. She was born August 17, 1915 to Oscar and Lillie Hastings (Stone) in a one room cabin with dirt floors in Paden, Okla. She attended school in Paden and Tribbey, Okla., prior to moving to Edmond in 1928, where she attended Higbee and Deer Creek School and completed the 8th grade.
She met and married Cecil Pack. From that union, eight children were born. Together they owned and operated Cecil’s Transfer OKC until 1954. She was employed at TG&Y, C.R. Anthony’s and the Little Red Barn at Frontier City. Her marriage ended in 1963.
On May 1, 1964 she married her life and soul mate, Ben Checotah. Upon Ben’s retirement they worked side by side at Nichols Casing Crews until they retired in 1984.
Her strong Christian faith led her to become a member of Temple Baptist Church. She enjoyed growing large vegetable gardens, beautiful rose gardens, fishing, camping, collecting dolls, and most of all cooking for her growing family. She also loved to sing karaoke. Her favorite song to sing was “Will the Circle be Unbroken”. Among her many talents and hobbies, she loved her family most of all.
She gave each family member unconditional love and devotion that grew deeper every day. She will live on in our memories as an incredible wife, mother, and grandmother who always placed the needs of her family above her own. Her family grew by leaps and bounds with each passing year. She had eight children, 20 grandchildren, 52 fourth generations, 57 fifth generations and 1 sixth generation. There are 164 total members of her clan.
She was preceded in death by husbands Ben Checotah and Cecil Pack; sons, Don and wife Judy Pack, Bobby Pack, and Charles Pack; daughter Sharon Pack; granddaughter, Debbie Ross (Pritchard); infant grandchildren, Donald Wayne, Terry Merle and Sharon Kay Pack; infant twin great-granddaughters and sons-in-law, Herald Pritchard and Tom Finley.
She is survived by her son Jerry and wife Debbie Pack of Fredericksburg, Pa.; daughters, LaNoma and husband Mike Crouch of Gore, Okla., Pat and husband Sid Wishon and Linda and husband Gary Underwood, both of Edmond; brother-in-law Roland Schmidt of Edmond, and sister-in-law, Pauline Hastings of Edmond; good friend Jeff Wisdom and many other friends and relatives.
The family thanks Amanda and Danielle at Interim Hospice OKC and Dr. Rickie Conrady for the loving and compassionate care given to Oma.
Reverend Terry Ward will officiate the service 2 p.m. Friday, January 4, 2013 at the Baggerley Chapel. Our Angel will close her service with her original recording of “Will the Circle be Unbroken”. Interment will follow at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond. Services entrusted to the care of Baggerley Funeral Home of Edmond. www.baggerley.com
