EDMOND —
Norman Augustus Powell, Norm to his friends, went to meet the Lord on January 26th after an extended treatment at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was 91 years old and a resident of Edmond, Okla.
Mr. Powell was a graduate of Virginia Polytechnic Institute (Virginia Tech) where he was a battalion commander in the Corp of Cadets. He was a World War II veteran having been a Captain in the HQ of the 71st Division (with General Patton). He lived most of his adult life in Nashville, Tenn. until his move to the Oklahoma City area in 2004. His career was in the retail petroleum business where he was successful in the corporate world until opening his own retail chain.
Mr. Powell was a member of the Benevolent & Protective Order of the Elks and received in 2010 his certificate for 40 continuous years as a member of the American Legion. On August 28, 1946 he wed Bernice Elder.
He was preceded in death by his mother Lillian Clarridge Hutt, father Roscoe L. Powell, and brother Paul E. Powell.
Mr. Powell is survived by wife, Bernice E. (Elder) Powell, Edmond; son, William Gregory Powell, San Marcos, Texas; grandson William Gabe Powell, Fort Huachuca, Ariz.; daughter by marriage, Stephanie Bouchallion Powell; great grandson, William Grayson Powell; granddaughter, Martha Powell Hite; son by marriage, Josh A. Hite; great grandsons, Andrew Gabriel Hite and Jude Waters Hite; daughter, Denise Powell Rachal and husband James L. Rachal; granddaughter, Laura Rachal Shelton and husband Scott Shelton; great grandsons, Timothy Herrerra, and Colby Herrera, Dillon Shelton; great granddaughter, Brookelyn Shelton; grandson, Trey Rachal and wife Jenn Rachal; and great granddaughter Grace Rachal.
Visitation will be 9:30 a.m. and the funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Tuesday, January 29, 2013 at St. Monica’s Catholic Church, 2001 Western Ave, Edmond. Interment will follow at Rose Hill Cemetery.
