EDMOND —
Rose Marie Dubberstein, 86, of Edmond, Okla., was born the fourth of six children to James B. and Agnes (Hudnall) O’Neill, second generation Marshall, Okla. wheat farmers. She graduated from St. Joseph High School in Enid, Okla., and went to work as a service rep for Southwestern Bell Telephone Company, where she met Vic Dubberstein. They wed in 1950. While Vic worked for Bell, she stayed home and they continued that way “til death did them part” when Vic passed away in 2004.
She was a mother in every sense and nuance of the word. She had twins: a stillborn son and a daughter who died at three. Rose Marie mourned and moved on, as much as anyone could, to rear, educate and nurture five more children, all of whom graduated into the teaching, dental or legal professions. Like so many women of her generation, she accepted her role in the home and mastered it, but it was always clear that she could have graduated with honors from college and been successful at anything.
The family moved from Enid to Oklahoma City to Altus to Tulsa and back to Oklahoma City; she made a comfortable home at every stop. Rose Marie had her ways; she could be stubborn at things she distrusted, but was also known to be brutally honest.
She returned to the workforce well past middle age as a dental office receptionist and was named employee-of-the month every month, which would’ve happened even if the dentist hadn’t been her youngest son. Rose Marie treated all 11 grandchildren the same: with patience, love and firmness. She always placed the interests of others before her own.
Rose Marie was preceded in death by her daughter Kathy, husband Vic, her sister Anne Raupe and brother Hugh O’Neill.
She is survived by her daughters Cindy Dubberstein, Cecilia Fox and husband Joe, and Connie Tatum; sons Mark Dubberstein and wife Barbie and Neill Dubberstein and wife Vickie; grandchildren Matti Dubberstein, Zane Dubberstein, Hart Dubberstein, Jake Dubberstein, Gavin Dubberstein, Roslyn Dubberstein, Brendan Fox, Hayden Fox, Alex Fox, Michael Tatum and Meredith Tatum; brothers Jimmy O’Neill of Midland, Texas, John O’Neill and wife Dorothy of Wichita, Kan., and sister, Detta Kretchmar of Enid, Okla.
The family extends undying thanks and prayers to all who assisted in Rose Marie’s care in the last months and final days.
Memorial services will be 10 a.m. Saturday, February 9, 2013 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church in Edmond. Services entrusted to Baggerley Funeral Home, Edmond.
