EDMOND —
T. Don Yager died peacefully at home surrounded by his family on Sunday, October 14, 2012. He was born October 12, 1932 in Durant Okla., the only child of Ross and Thelma (Downs) Yager.
Don attended college at Texas Christian University and South Eastern State University. He met, pursued and then married the love of his life Paula Williams. They were married on April 26, 1958 and enjoyed 54 years as husband and wife. He was a successful retail executive for over 30 years, a wonderful father and grandfather, and a treasured friend.
Don was driven to achieve in all things. He was proud of his service in the Air Force as a navigator, a first lieutenant with Strategic Air Command stationed in Lincoln, Neb. He began his 26 year career with Montgomery Wards as a manufacturing buyer in Fort Worth, Texas and completed his career as the vice president of the New York office. TG&Y brought him back to his Oklahoma roots where he later owned a Hallmark store in Stillwater, Okla. until his retirement. Don intensely pursued his varied interests which included cooking, eating, photography, reading, travel, fishing, and technology.
Don was gifted with a keen sense of humor. He was as comfortable in his Easter Bunny costume at the church egg hunt as he was in his three piece suit and tie. Don was playful and a great storyteller. An ordinary life experience could evolve to legendary proportions with his embellishments. His most favorite times were spent laughing with family and friends over a great meal and a dry martini. He looked for the funny side of difficult situations and was never afraid to make fun of himself to get a good laugh.
Don was committed to his family and friends. He was devoted to his wife Paula and proud of his son Chris, his daughter Lisa Marotta and her husband Sal. He was an active “Poppy” to his grandchildren Lindsay and Kate, enthusiastically attending their many concerts, recitals, and events. Don was involved and grateful for his church family at Lord of Life, his neighborhood friends, and long time Air force buddies from the 98th Air Refueling Squadron.
Services will be 10 a.m. Thursday, October 18, 2012 at Lord of Life Lutheran Church, Edmond, OK. (Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Service)
