EDMOND —
Alice Virginia Smith, 79, of Edmond, Okla., passed away November 27, 2012 in Oklahoma City, Okla. She was born August 22, 1933 in Golden, Okla. to Garland and Flora (Bean) Raines.
Alice grew up in far southeastern Oklahoma and attended Broken Bow High School, where in the 9th grade she was chosen to be the high school’s representative to a biology conference in Henryetta, Okla. This was about as big as it got for a Broken Bow High School student in those days, and she enjoyed every minute of it. Alice was also a member of the Honor Society throughout her years in Broken Bow. In 1951, she also attended school at John Marshall where she lettered in basketball, and was very proud of her letter jacket. She graduated from John Marshall High School in May of 1952.
After high school, Alice went to work for the Department of Human Services. Shortly thereafter, her sister introduced her to Leroy Smith and before long, they were married, and she worked at the legal department at Tinker Field Air Force Base.
After the birth of her second daughter, Alice became a stay-at-home mom. She went back to work in 1970 and took a position at the commissioner’s office of the Department of Transportation. She enrolled in college and took computer programming classes, and later became a computer programmer analyst supervisor, and was responsible for the team of programmers who developed the State payroll system used for the employees across the State of Oklahoma for many years.
In 1984, Leroy and Alice built their dream home in Edmond, and after her retirement, Alice’s favorite thing to do was work in her garden and flower beds, especially picking weeds. She also enjoyed canning the fruits from her garden, going to yard sales and caring for her children, grandchildren, great-grandchildren and neighbors.
Alice was baptized at Millwood Baptist Church in February 1961 and was a member of Classen Boulevard Baptist Church. Her pure, sweet, kind, and compassionate spirit will be missed by all.
Alice is preceded in death by her parents; sister Ruby Allman, and brother Roy Raines.
She is survived by sister, Margaret Carroll and husband David; her husband of 58 years, Leroy Smith; children, Nancy Atkinson and husband Jack, and Debra Shuffield; grandchildren Kristina Morel and Matthew Morel; and great-grandchild Molly Morel.
Services for Alice will be 2 p.m. Tuesday, December 4 at Baggerley Funeral Home, Edmond, with interment following at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond.
