Harriett Grace (Lay) Wagnon

EDMOND —     Harriett Wagnon, of Edmond, Okla., died from cancer with family by her side on May 23, 2014, and went to be with her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ.

Born August 16, 1946, to Alva Lorraine and Gerald Coy Lay in Hominy, her early years were spent attending First Baptist Church of Hominy, enjoying country living and developing a love for horses. She attended Hominy Public Schools, was a member of the band, and graduated from Hominy High in 1964, when she served as senior class president, earned Salutatorian honors and was crowned Buck Queen.

She attended the University of Central Oklahoma (then Central State College) and was active in the Baptist Student Union before earning a B.S. in Secretarial Science in 1970. She thrived as an administrative professional for more than 40 years, most notably for a dozen years as pastor’s secretary at Henderson Hills Baptist Church in Edmond and 25 years as association executive for the Edmond Board of Realtors. Her dedicated service and excellent contributions received special recognition from the Oklahoma Association of Realtors in December 2012.

She was preceded in death by her parents and is survived by her high school sweetheart and husband of nearly 47 years John “Skip” Wagnon of Edmond, daughter Jenny Wagnon-Monroe of Edmond, son Stan Wagnon and wife Jill of Frisco, Texas, grandchildren Wesley and Mackenzie Monroe and Devin and Hannah Ramirez of Edmond and Abby and Macy Wagnon of Frisco, sister Kenna Bergren and husband Scott of Edmond, brother Gerry Lay of Hominy, sister Sarita Brown and husband Dennis of Broken Arrow, uncle Kenneth Lay and wife Anna of Edmond, uncle David Combs and wife Shirley of Hoffman Estates, Ill., and a host of cousins, nieces, a nephew and other loved ones.

She was proud of her Lay heritage and expressed her love for family in telling others of her children’s accomplishments, caring for her beloved grandchildren, and relishing opportunities to travel with her husband. She often could be found accompanying her husband at endless sporting events and was quite good at making it seem as if she actually enjoyed the games.

She developed a love for golf and was a member of the Business Women’s, KickingBird and Lake Hefner Ladies Golf Associations. Since 1971 she was a loyal member of Henderson Hills Baptist Church, where she volunteered with baptisms and, upon retirement, at the Ministries of Jesus medical clinic.

The family extends special gratitude to Dr. Kathleen Moore and staff at Stephenson Cancer Center for superb care the past two years.

Donations in memory of Harriett may be made to HHBC Ministries of Jesus (1100 E. I-35 Frontage Rd, Edmond, OK 73034 or http://www.hhbc.com/ministries/moj/donate-to-moj/.

Visitation will be 6-8 p.m., Tuesday, May 27 at Baggerley Funeral Home in Edmond.

Funeral service will be 10:30 a.m. Wednesday, May 28, 2014 at Henderson Hills Baptist Church in Edmond.  Interment will be 3:30 p.m. at A.J. Powell Memorial Cemetery in Hominy, OK.
