Janet R. Hatcher

EDMOND —     Janet R. Hatcher, 73, passed away June 17, 2014, after a cruel journey with A.L.S.   Daughter of Fred and Erna Appis, she was born July 11, 1940 in New York City, N.Y.

She is survived by her husband of 54 years, James Hatcher; daughter Laura (Glen) Harrison of Yukon, Okla.; sons David (Pauline) Hatcher of Massapequa, N.Y., Gary (fiancée Barbara Lawrence) Hatcher of Edmond, and Eric Hatcher of Edmond; stepdaughters Kathy (Bob) Josepher of Manorville, N.Y. and Debra (Chuck) Deigert of Bushkill, Pa.; granddaughters Kristan, Danielle, Christi Lee, Emily, Kelli, Skye; and grandsons James, Billy, and Danny, and above all, great-grandson Ethan who Janet loved to take to museums.  Also surviving Janet is sister Caroline Appis and husband Tom Trittipo of Stuart, Fla., brothers Jurgen (Cathy) Appis of Chester, N.J., Richard (Marge) Appis of Mead, Wash., and Ken (Diana) Appis of Westminster, Colo.

Janet was preceded in death by daughter Theresa Coffman and granddaughter Jessica Hatcher.

While residing in New York, she began her career but never forgot her church and civic duty.  In 1985 she and her family relocated to Edmond where she continued to be very active.  In her words she said, “Volunteerism has been a part of my life since I was young.”  She was chairperson of the Logan County Democratic Party for many years and was proud to be a diehard democrat.  However, volunteering at church held a special place in her heart as she said, “While community-at-large brings satisfaction, nothing has brought me so many blessings by working in and for St. Monica’s Catholic Church.”  Whether chairing or serving on various committees, Janet shared her time and talents.  She loved gardening, so St. Isidore Society was a perfect fit.  Her love of the poor was evident in her work with St. Vincent De Paul Society.  She was chair of the welcoming committee for new parishioners and active in Sacred Heart Parish in Oklahoma City.  She cooked meals for the sick.  If a parishioner needed help or guidance for some organization she was there.  As a result of her endeavors she was awarded St. Monica’s Women of Achievement in 2008.

The family would like to thank Maryellen Sessa for her daily spiritual support given to Janet during this journey.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be given to Regional Food Bank of OKC.

Mass of Christian Burial will be 10 a.m. Friday, June 20, at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church. Services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
