Steven J. Merrill

EDMOND —     Steven J. Merrill, 75, born August 12, 1938 in Dover, N.H., passed away January 5, 2014 at Willow Creek Nursing Home with family by his side.

Stevey was preceded in death by his parents, Raymond and Katherine Merrill; his late wife, Clara Sue Merrill; his sister, Blanche Hanks, and brother-in-law, Roland J. Hanks.

He is survived by two daughters, four nieces, and their extended families.

Stevey served in the Navy from 1957-1971. He was a cook in the military as well as when he returned home. He loved sports of all kinds; however, his passion was baseball and golf.  Stevey played both sports on an amateur level. He was a simple man and required only friendships, always extending a helping hand when needed. He gained lifelong friends wherever he was.  He made his home in Arizona and Oklahoma.  He will leave behind many friends who will miss his smile and humor.

Stevey found an extended family at Trinity Episcopal Church in Guthrie.  He served for many years with an outreach program feeding the less fortunate, and looked forward to doing this each week.  His favorite saying was, “I am strong like bull - dumb like jackass.”  He fought a long battle and now it is time to rest.

Stevey’s memorial service will be Sunday, January 26, at Trinity Episcopal Church, 310 E. Noble Ave., Guthrie, Okla. A luncheon will be at 1 p.m. and the service will follow at 3 p.m. Donations to the Oklahoma Hospice Group can be made in lieu of flowers.  We will miss you Uncle Stevey and we love you … more.  Selected services were under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond.
