Susan Jane (Janey) Elswick Sparks was born February 22, 1948, in Oklahoma City, Okla. and passed away June 11, 2013 in Tulsa, Okla.
Janey attended Oklahoma State University before working for City Service Gas and Cryogenics in Oklahoma City. She grew up as a member of Portland Avenue Baptist Church in Oklahoma City where her family was long-time members. She married Glen L. Sparks on January 18, 1969.
During her husband’s career, the Sparks family lived in Oklahoma City; Bethioua, Algeria; Pinedale, Wyo.; Maryville, Tenn., and later, Tulsa, Okla., which brought her closer to her family. She worked in medical offices, most recently the Utica Psychiatric Services in Tulsa. She later left the medical office to take care of her parents when her father became terminally ill, and she moved them from Edmond, Okla. to Tulsa in 2005.
In October 2011 she was diagnosed with pancreatic cancer and began treatments in November, 2011, and moved to the Cancer Treatments Centers of America in Tulsa in February 2012. During this time she continued to
take care of her mother. She entered the Cancer Treatment Center’s
hospital on Saturday June 8, with complication and passed away on the morning of June 11.
She is survived by her husband, Glen L. Sparks of Tulsa, Okla., her oldest son Rev. Matthew Glen Sparks of San Diego, Calif., her second son Lt. Comdr. US. Navy Jason Lee Sparks of Okinawa, and her daughter Julie Ann Barnes of Tulsa, eight grandchildren with another on the way. She is also survived by her mother Rosalee Inez Elswick of Tulsa, and her brother James “Jim” Delos Elswick of Houston, Texas.
Janey had a compassionate heart and left a lasting impression on everyone she came in contact with, both young and old. She will be greatly missed.
Family will receive friends from 4-6 p.m. Sunday, June 16 at Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond.
Services will be 11 a.m. Monday, June 17 at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel. Interment will be 3 p.m. at Kingfisher Cemetery.
