EDMOND —
Geraldine (Jerri) E. Jones, 87, of Edmond, Okla., was born September 11, 1925 in New Orleans, La. and spent her early life in the South. She graduated from Pennsacola HS in 1941, attended Transylvania college in Kentucky and Texas Christian University in Fort Worth, Texas, where she earned her Bachelor of Arts degree.
Jerri moved to Oklahoma City in 1959 and later settled in Edmond in 1964. She had been a substitute teacher in the Millwood school system and Edmond public schools, but then began teaching full-time at the First Christian Church private kindergarten. When kindergarten was added to the Edmond school system in 1968, she was one of the first teachers hired for the Clyde Howell School kindergarten center, and later transferred to Northern Hills Elementary School. She earned her masters degree at Central State College in 1971.
Jerri became a member of the First Christian Church after moving to Edmond and was very involved in various ministries, including Steven’s ministry and served two years as president of CWF. She was a long-time member of the Homebuilders’ class, and was proud that she was her minister’s (Chris Shorow) kindergarten teacher. Her passion was children, and she cherished her 22-plus years as a kindergarten teacher, and after retiring in 1990, continued to volunteer at several Edmond schools as a story-teller so she could continue touching lives of children.
She was preceded in death by her parents, Martyn and Geraldine Crigler, her brother, Martyn, Jr., and her daughter, Judith Rudek.
She is survived by her sister, Patricia Crigler of Bethany, daughter and son-in-law Jennifer and Cliff Loper of Edmond; granddaughter Valerie Brown and her husband Shawn Brown, and grandson Chris Loper and his wife, Alisha Loper of Oklahoma City, and great-granddaughter, Isabel brown and great-grandson, Felix Owen Loper.
Funeral services for Jerri will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, November 28, 2012 in the Chapel at The First Christian Church, Edmond.
Services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Edmond.
