EDMOND —
William Basil Martin, Jr., 84, of Edmond, Okla., died Thursday, December 6, 2012 in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born July 9, 1928 in Muskogee, Okla., the only child to Wm. Basil Martin and Elizabeth Dorthea (Bombeck) Martin.
Basil lived primarily with his beloved grandmother Louisa Teresa Francisca Bombeck in Muskogee, until she died when he was nine. His grandmother came to America from Alsace Lorraine, France and became the governess of Senator Robert Owens’ children, the first senator of Oklahoma. She met and married Henry Bombeck, who was a cattle broker from Germany.
Basil attended school in Muskogee and joined the U.S. Navy in 1946, serving three years. Upon his return from the Navy he attended and graduated from Northeastern State University, where he was a member of Kappa Mu Epsilon, honorary math society. He married Mary D. Hair of Muskogee on March 17, 1953. They have one son, Wm. Basil Martin, III of Oklahoma City, who shares Basil’s birthday.
Basil began working for OG&E in the construction department in Muskogee upon his graduation from college. He was transferred from Muskogee to Harrah, and then to the general office in Oklahoma City, where he became coordinator of computer applications in the engineering department, from where he retired after 33 years with the company. Basil began playing golf with his father when he was 11 years old, and has always loved the game. He was an avid reader and liked to garden, and was a member of Lakeside Assembly of God. One of Basil’s favorite Scriptures is, “Yet we have this assurance: Those who belong to God shall live again.” Isaiah 26:19 (TLB)
He was preceded in death by his parents.
Basil is survived by his son and daughter-in-law, Basil III and Tonja Martin; sister-in-law Patricia Bennett of Tulsa; several nephews and nieces, and many friends.
Formal visitation will be 9-10:30 a.m. Wednesday December 12, 2012 at Matthews Funeral Home.
Funeral services will follow at 11 a.m. at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel, Edmond, Okla.
Services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Service in Edmond.
