EDMOND —
Leon David Porter, 56, of Edmond, Okla., was born May 13, 1956 in El Segundo, Calif., to Lawrence Dale and Dolores Porter. He passed away December 12, 2012.
Dave was active in sports; baseball and track. He loved raising tropical fish and had more than 20 tanks at one time. His two greatest loves were the mountains and learning. He spent a lot of time fishing, hiking, and hunting in the Sierras of California as a boy: and later on he loved spending time in the mountains of Southern and Southeastern Utah.
His love for learning was a driving force. He earned his Bachelor of Science degree at Southern Utah University in Zoology/Biology, 1986; his Masters degree in Molecular Cellular Biology at University of Houston, 1989; a Ph.D in Biochemistry at The University of Colorado, 1997; he also did post-doctoral work at The University of Oklahoma Health Science Center. Dave loved learning outside of academia as well and collected many papers and books on a wide variety of subjects including history, literature, science, chemistry, logic, and mathematics. His idea of an enjoyable hour or two was going out to the lake and reading a copy of Hogbens Math for the Million, or other similar titles. He also loved to read from books about gospel subjects and grew to very knowledgeable about things of the spirit as well.
Dave married his high school sweetheart Tammy Jolley in 1975 and they began their family soon after. They had seven awesome children: Kirstien Marie Green, Leon David Jr., Kimberly Ann Sinclair, Kathy Lyn Barrera, Krystal Dawn Mills, Kaycie Rae Porter, and Kaolin Rachel Porter. He was the proud grandpa of 10 grandchildren: Kira Mari, Sawyer Mari, Kameron Daniels, Cotty Morin, James Daniels, Landre Porter, Rawlinz Porter, Ellis Porter, Dominick Sinclair, Braedan Sinclair, and a soon-to- be arriving baby boy Mills.
Dave will be greatly missed when ever we are planning a camping trip, or any kind of family outing. We will miss his odd sense of humor, and his individuality. We will just miss him in so many small ways.
A funeral service will be Tuesday, December 18, 2012, beginning with a 10 a.m. graveside service at Arcadia IOOF Cemetery followed by a 1 p.m. church service at the Edmond Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints.
