Donald C. Slack

EDMOND —     Funeral service for Donald C. “Don” Slack, 80, of Edmond, Okla., will be 1 p.m., Tuesday, July 9, 2013, at the First United Methodist Church, 305 E. Hurd, officiated by Rev. Dr. Bertha M. Pott. Burial will follow in the IOOF Cemetery in Norman, Okla. under the direction of Jackson Funeral Home of Frederick. Mr. Slack went to be with his Lord on Saturday, July 6, 2013, at his home.

    Don was born April 19, 1933, in Kingfisher, Okla. to Don and Alberta Jeanette (Brown) Slack. He attended Kingfisher Public Schools, graduating from Kingfisher High School in 1951. He began his collegiate career at the University of Oklahoma and was a member of the Lambda Chi Alpha Fraternity. He continued his studies at Southwestern State University in Weatherford where he established the Professional Pharmacy Fraternity known as Phi Delta Chi. He received a Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy in 1956.

    Don married Shirley Ann Ash on  August 5, 1956. He began working at Oakley’s Drug in Enid and remained there until 1969. Then, following in his father’s footsteps, he became the second Don Slack to own and operate Don’s Drug in Crescent, Okla. After selling the business, Don and Shirley moved to Edmond in June 1977, where he worked for Treasure Drug in Oklahoma City and Evan’s Drug in Edmond. On November 1, 2001, Don received his Doctor of Pharmacy degree and later was employed for TV Drug, Edmond/Mark’s Drug in Guthrie before retiring in 2008 with 52 years of service.

    Don was a member of the First United Methodist Church of Edmond and a former member of the Enid Jaycees and Crescent Lions Club. His family was a important part of his life. He will be remembered for his great sense of humor and silly “Pampa” jokes. Don enjoyed all sports and was an avid OSU and Dallas Cowboys fan.

    He is survived by his wife, Shirley of the home; one daughter and son-in-law, Karen and Robin Noad of Norman; a son, Jeff Slack of Arlington, Texas; two grandchildren, Alyssa Cozby and her husband Geoff of Bedford, Texas and Anthony Hancock of Norman; two great-granddaughters, Aidalynne and Avery Cozby; brother-in-law and sisters-in-law, Boyd and Marion Ash of Chickasha and Inola Ash of Cache; and a host of cousins, nieces, nephews and many friends.

    He was preceded in death by his parents; and a daughter and son-in-law, Sheri and Jim Hancock.

    Memorial contributions may be made to the Oklahoma Medical Research Foundation, Cancer Research, 825 NE 13th Street, Oklahoma City, Ok 73104, or Companion Hospice, 1310 E. Oklahoma, Guthrie, OK 73044 in memory of Donald C. “Don” Slack.

    Visitation will be from 10 a.m. - noon Tuesday at the First United Methodist Church in Edmond.
