Charles E. O’Donnell

EDMOND —     Charles Eugene O’Donnell, 77, passed away Tuesday, July 9, 2013 at his home in Edmond, Okla. He was born May 28, 1936 in Vinco, Okla., to Charles Bernard and Laurel (Cypert) O’Donnell.  He graduated from Stillwater High School and attended Tulsa University, East Central University, and Oklahoma State University, earning both Bachelor’s and Master’s of Science degrees. On August 15, 1958 he married the love of his life, Nancy Walker and they were together until his death.

    He served as coach, high school principal, and school superintendent during his career at Hollis, Perry and Carney. He was a member of the Church of Christ and the Rotary Club in which he served as president. His professional associations include the Oklahoma Education Association, the National Education Association, Oklahoma Coaches Association, and an advocate/sponsor for the Fellowship of Christian Athletes.

    He especially loved fishing with his brothers, son, and grandson, and enjoyed gardening. While coaching, he took annual fishing trips with his players. For 46 years, his students and players were his motivation to promote the highest standards and ideals of education. As with all endeavors, he gave his best.

    Charles is preceded in death by parents, Charles and Laurel O’Donnell and his sister, Karen Kay O’Donnell.

    He is survived by his wife, Nancy O’Donnell of Edmond; son, Charles Joseph O’Donnell and wife Leasa of Wichita, Kan.; daughter, Debra Kaye O’Donnell-Demier and husband, Sergio, of Edmond; grandchildren, Kaegen, Kale, and Kinley O’Donnell and Jonathon Demier; and brothers, James (Betty), Robert (Linda), Ted and Tim (Vicki) O’Donnell and many cousins, nieces, and nephews.

    During his prolonged illness, Charles supported dog rescue efforts. Chloe, his favorite rescue dog, always had a loving home in Charles’ lap. Charles would be proud to have contributions made in his name to his favorite rescue organization: Because of You Rescue c/o Barbara Siegrist, 16008 Deer Ct., Edmond, OK 73013.

    Funeral services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13, 2013 at the Carney High School Auditorium in Carney, Okla. Interment will follow at the Perkins Cemetery in Perkins, Okla, under the direction of Strode Funeral Home. strodefh.com.
