Janice Ewer

EDMOND —     Janice Ewer, 72, was born April 9, 1941 in Elk City, Okla., to Mary and A. N. “Ab” Mullennix. She passed away December 31, 2013 in Oklahoma City, Okla.

    Janice was raised in Carter where she attended school and was an accomplished basketball player, receiving an invitation to become a member of the Flying Queens Basketball Team. She graduated from high school in 1959 and continued her education at Southwestern Oklahoma State University where she received her Bachelor’s degree in Education. She was married to Alton Ewer in Carter, Okla., on June 5, 1965 and they lived in Edmond, Okla. She began her teaching career at Putnam City and worked toward her Master’s Degree at the University of Central Oklahoma which she completed in 1969. Janice later began teaching at Edmond Mid-High in 1980. After retiring in 1993, Janice split her time between Sayre and Edmond to care for her grandchildren and other children in the community who affectionately knew her as “Mommom.”  Janice enjoyed reading and loved to watch her grandchildren play sports and spending time with her family.

    She was preceded in death by her father.

She is survived by her husband, Alton Ewer, of the home; her children, Jana Eckhart, Shelley Varnell, and Jeff Ewer and wife Jennifer, all of Sayre, Okla.; her mother,  Mary Mullennix of Edmond; eight grandchildren and two great-grandchildren; three sisters, Velta Northrip and husband, Jack, Moore, Okla.; Freeda Ponder, Amarillo, Texas, and Sue Taylor and husband, Jerry of Edmond, and a host of other relatives and friends.

    Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, January 4, 2014 at Sayre Church of Christ officiated by Billy Clabaugh. Burial will be at Buffalo Cemetery under the direction of Rose Chapel Funeral Service. Condolences can be made online at
