Father Lawrence T. Kowalski dies at 76

EDMOND — The Rev. Lawrence T. Kowalski, who served numerous parishes in the state including St. John the Baptist Catholic Church, died Jan. 10 in Edmond. He was 76.

After graduating from Penn State University with a bachelor’s degree in political science, Father Kowalski entered St. Mary’s Seminary, Baltimore, and later Conception Seminary, Missouri. He was ordained in November 1969. 

During his more than 40 years as a priest, he served many parishes throughout the Archdiocese of Oklahoma City including: Blessed Sacrament Church, Lawton; St. Francis of Xavier Church, Enid; Sacred Heart Church, Alva; St. John the Baptist, Edmond; Our Lady of Perpetual Help, Sterling; Holy Family Church, Lawton; St. Catherine Church, Pauls Valley; St. Peter Church, Lindsay and St. Gregory the Great, Enid, where he served as pastor for many years prior to his retirement from active ministry in 2011.  

During his priesthood, Kowalski also served as a Chaplain at Mount St. Mary High School, Oklahoma City, and at the University of Central Oklahoma.

A Memorial Mass will be celebrated at 2 p.m. Tuesday at St. Gregory the Great Catholic Church in Enid. Internment will be at Transformation Cemetery, West Hazleton, Penn.

Kowalski’s family has requested that memorials be made to St. Gregory the Great Church, 1924 W. Willow Road, Enid, OK 73703.
