Eugene Dobkins

EDMOND —     Eugene (Gene) Dobkins, 81, of Edmond, Okla., died on July 30, 2012.  He was born October 27, 1930, the son of Edward and Nancy Mae Dobkins, in Columbus, Ohio, where he spent his youth.

    He joined the U.S. Army in 1950 and served with the 25th Division fighting in Korea.  He served in the Army until 1958.

    In 1956 while stationed at Fort Crowder, Neosho, Mo., he met and married Verdean Evans.  She survives along with their son Kent and his wife Diana Dobkins, grandson Sean and his wife Leah Dobkins, grandson Dustin Dobkins and many nieces and nephews.

    In 1962 they moved to Abilene, Texas and he attended Abilene Christian University.  They moved to Wichita, Kan. for a year and later to Lubbock in 1965.  In 1967 he began working for the U.S. Post Office in Lubbock, Texas as a letter carrier and retired (on disability) in 1987.

    While living in Lubbock, Gene was active in the football, basketball, and Umpire Associa-tions and the Lubbock Bowling Associa-tion.  He was a member of the Yellowhouse Masonic Lodge 841 of Lubbock, Texas.

In 1988 they moved to Shell Knob, Mo.  He helped with umpiring little league baseball and was associated with the Cedar Creek golfing league.  He also enjoyed fishing in the Tablerock Lake.

    In 2001 they moved to Edmond.  He worked part time for Wal-Mart in Guthrie, Okla.  In Edmond he worked for Master’s Electronics and T.O. Marketing.  He also continued his golfing.

    A memorial service will be 7 p.m. Thursday, August 9, 2012, at the Waterloo Road Church of Christ, 4404 E. Waterloo Road.

    Memorials may be made to the Children’s Home of Lubbock, PO Box 2824, Lubbock, Texas 79408-2824.

    Funeral services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond.
