Betty Jane Martin Draper

EDMOND — Betty Jane Martin Draper, 90, was born August 13, 1922, in Guthrie, Okla., and left this world on Thursday, August 1, 2013, in Edmond, Okla.

Betty was raised in southern Logan County, alongside Old 77 where her father ran a garage and service station. Betty’s mother died when she was very young and Betty had to assume much of the responsibility of raising her younger sisters and brother. She attended Charter Oak School on old route 77. During World War II, she worked in Britton, where she met her husband, Dale; they married in December 1942. They raised their children in the area of Lake Arcadia where Betty had a successful Avon business. To this union was born Richard, Larry and Sherri. After Mr. Martin became disabled, Betty had to assume a bigger financial role in the family and began working full time, including her job with OCC in their mail room. Mr. Martin died in 1991, just a month shy of their 50th wedding anniversary. Several years later she married in 1995 Edwin Draper.

Betty loved selling Avon, cooking and raising flowers, especially her irises. When her sons were in school she helped with the various FFA activities in Edmond. During the last few years, she lived at Tealridge retirement community. She was a long time member of Memorial Road Church of Christ.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Newell and Martha Si-Opha Ard Miller; her brother Bob Miller; daughter Sherri and grandson Phillip Martin.

Betty is survived by sons, Richard and his wife of Luther, Okla., Larry and wife Kathy of Enid, Okla., grandsons Chris and wife Tammy, Michael and wife Christy, and Phillip’s wife Shaunna, and eight great grandchildren. She is also survived by sisters Helen Deiling, Reta Roller and Martha Atchley and their families; and her second husband, Edwin Draper.

Visitation will be from noon to 4 p.m. Sunday, August 4, at Memorial Park Funeral Home. Funeral services will be 10 a.m. Monday, August 5 at Memorial Park Funeral Home Chapel with burial following in Memorial Park Cemetery by her first husband, Dale.

Betty’s family thanks the caregivers at the Memory Care Unit at Tealridge and Centennial Hospice for their care during these years.
