Mary Hope Powell Nicar

EDMOND —     Mary Hope Powell Nicar was born in Enid, Okla., to Dr. Wilfred and Lois (Lemon) Powell on Easter Sunday, April 8, 1928, the youngest of three daughters. Mary Hope graduated from Enid High School in 1946 and attended Phillips University where she studied art, music and drama. While at Phillips, she met and married Reo (Nick) Nicar, and they had three children. They were members of Hite Boulevard Christian Church.

In 1962, the family moved from Enid to Edmond so that Reo could attend OCU Law School. They were members of the First Christian Church in Edmond where Mary and Reo were in the choir.

Mary Hope’s family was her life. She was a devoted daughter, sister, wife, mother, aunt, grandmother and great-grandmother. But, her gentle, loving and caring sweet personality wasn’t just for family; she always had a smile, a kind word and a helping hand for anyone. Everyone who knew her loved her.

In earlier years, she could always be found helping at her church with choir, Christian Women’s Fellowship, Vacation Bible School, and youth groups. She was also a Blue Bird/Camp Fire Leader, a Cub Scout Den Mother, a homeroom mom and was active in PTA.

Mary loved music and instilled a love of music in her children. She was particularly fond of musicals. She played the piano and had a beautiful singing voice. She had a creative flare that was apparent in everything she did from making clothes and costumes, creating Cub Scout plays, making parade floats, and decorating cakes. She loved modern art and her house was full of bright colors including the garage door she painted so bright it made the house recognizable to everyone in town. Her favorite artist was Georgia O’Keefe.

She loved nature, animals and especially bird watching. When Reo retired, they traveled the country in their motor home visiting their favorite places, friends and family. When Reo died in 1993, Mary moved to Norman to live with her daughter, Robin. She was a member of the First Christian Church of Norman.

Most of all she loved being with her family. When her sister was moved into a memory care facility, she visited her almost daily and when she developed Alzheimer’s as well, in 2007, they shared a room and were inseparable until Evelyn’s death nine months ago.

At the time of her death on Friday, March 8, 2013, she was surrounded by her daughters, daughter-in-law and granddaughter. The family would like to thank Reminisce Arbor House and Crossroad’s Hospice for the wonderful, loving care she received by their caregivers.

Her parents, her sisters, Margaret Ann Powell Aurenz and Evelyn Dean Powell and her husband, Reo, preceded Mary in death.

She is survived by her three children, Robin Nicar, Bill Nicar (Delores) and Nicolette Nicar all of Norman; grandchildren, Anngela Harper Kirby, Justin Harper (Allison), Dylan Walter, Jordan Payne (Taylor) and Cody Walter all of Norman, Jessie Payne (Leslie) of Tulsa, and Laura Halstied (Kenny) of Okla. City; and her great-grandchildren, Darreck Kirby of Okla. City, Joscelyn Hope Harper and baby girl Harper (due in June) of Norman, Lillian Payne of Tulsa and Tre, Evan and Kaiden Halstied of Okla. City. Also, a brother-in-law, Mel Aurenz of Lafayette, Ind. and a nephew, Scot (Pat) Aurenz and great-niece, Stephanie Aurenz of Nashua, N.H. and a dear friend since elementary school, Barbara Waters of Norman.

A memorial service for Mary will be 11 a.m. Saturday, March 16, 2013 at the First Christian Church, 312 W. Comanche St., Norman, Okla. Arrangements are being made by Ladusau-Evans Funeral Home, Enid.

Donations in Mary’s behalf may be made to: The Permanent Fund of University Place Christian Church, 2107 E. Broadway, Enid, OK 73701; or Alzheimer’s Association, 3555 NW 58th Street, Suite 220, Okla. City, OK 73112.
