Gwendolyone “Joy” Leazer

EDMOND —     Gwendolyone “Joy” Leazer, 78, passed away peacefully at home in Edmond, Okla. after a lengthy illness. She was born one of six children to Mark Everett and Carrie (Prosser) Keele in Crescent, Okla.

    Joy married Edward “Russell” Leazer on December 17, 1954. They have five children, Lisa Thompson and husband Tim of Edmond, Dell Van Leazer and wife Joyce of Piedmont, Nathan Leazer and wife Rhonda of Oklahoma City, Karrie Jo Terrell of Edmond and Amy Leazer of Oklahoma City; and are proud of their 11 grandchildren and seven great-grand children.

    Joy was a devout Christian, an avid Bible reader and was a member of Memorial Road Church of Christ. In 1972, Joy received her teaching certificate from Central State University, Edmond, and began her teaching career in 1973 at Crescent Elementary in Crescent, Okla. Joy was voted Crescent District Teacher of the Year for school year 1993-94. She retired in 1996.

    She was preceded in death by her parents, and one sister, Elsie Faulkner. She is survived by her husband, Russell, her five children, her grandchildren, great-grand children and four of her siblings.

    The family would like to thank the staff of Companion Hospice for their compassionate care during Joy’s illness.

    In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Companion Hospice of Edmond/Guthrie or University of Central Oklahoma-Old North Renovation Project (

    Memorial services will be 10:30 a.m. Thursday, December 27, 2012, at Memorial Road Church of Christ, under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home in Edmond.
