Roena Curry Smith

EDMOND —     Roena Belle Curry Smith, 92, of Edmond, Okla. was born September 26, 1920 to Clark Curry and Sara Stewart Curry, early day Stroud, Okla. merchants. She passed away July 11, 2013.

    Mrs. Smith received her B.A. from Oklahoma College for Women and taught in Mountain Home and Ringling, Okla., and in Taos, N.M.  She taught English at Classen High School in Oklahoma City, Okla.

    Roena was married in Taos to Kenneth Woodrow Smith who preceded her in death in 1987.  From this union three children were born:  Sara Linda Smith, Kip C. Smith (Betty), and Brenda Katharine Pitts (Bruce).  She leaves in addition, her grandchildren, David, Mark (Allison), and Scott Pitts, Zachary (Becky) and Amanda Smith, and two great-grandchildren, Jayden Wright and Lydia Pitts.

     During her professional career, Mrs. Smith was president of the Oklahoma City Teachers of English and president of the Alpha Nu Chapter of Delta Kappa Gamma, an honorary society of teachers.  She was recognized by the American Federation of Teachers as the Outstanding Teacher in Oklahoma City in 1983.  Upon retirement, Mrs. Smith became active as an ombudsman for a nursing home and a member of the Quilt Guild, League of Women Voters, A.A.U.A., Friendship Force (with whom she traveled extensively), and the Late Bloomers Garden Club of Oklahoma City.
