Kenneth Frank Wegner, Jr. M.S., D.A.B.R., F.A.C.R., age 65, of Edmond, Okla., passed away October 28, 2013 in Oklahoma City, Okla., with his family by his side.
He was born May 21, 1948 in Berkeley, Calif., to Francis Estelle Wegner and Kenneth Frank Wegner, Sr. He moved to Oklahoma City, Okla., with his parents when he was five years old.
Kenneth served his country proudly in the United States Air Force. He joined voluntarily in 1967 and is a Vietnam Veteran. He was honorably discharged in 1971 as a Staff Sergeant.
He subsequently earned an undergraduate degree in Electrical Engineering from Oklahoma State University in 1974, and then a master’s degree in Medical Physics from the University of Oklahoma in 1977. He was board certified in Medical Physics by the American Board of Radiology.
Kenneth had recently retired from the University of Oklahoma Health Sciences Center where he served as vice chairman of the Department of Radiological Sciences and also vice chairman of Research and Information Technology from 2004-2013. He began working in the Department of Radiological Sciences in 1974. During that time he had also served as a Medical Physicist and Business Administrator. He had a passion for teaching, and regularly taught classes for the residents in the Department of Radiological Sciences. Just this month, he had been notified that he was selected to receive the distinct honor of being named a Fellow of the American College of Radiology, the highest honor awarded by this organization.
Kenneth held memberships in many professional organizations and was a past president of the Oklahoma State Radiological Society.
He met his future wife and best friend, Gwen Marie Cooper, when he was just six years old. They were married on May 22, 1971. Kenneth and Gwen celebrated their 42nd year of marriage this year and remained deeply in love and committed to each other.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen Marie Wegner, of Edmond; a son, Kenneth Cooper Wegner and his long time girlfriend, April Lyn Clark, of Oklahoma City; a daughter Kelley Marie Lobb M.D. and son-in-law Quentin Daniel Lobb M.D. of Norman, Okla.; a grandson Jackson Baldwin Lobb of Norman; a sister Cheryl Klein and her husband Randy Klein of Newalla, Oklla., and their daughter Amy Sanwick of Jenks, Okla.; a sister-in law Sharon Mayfield of Edmond, and her daughters Michelle Lashley and Angie Mayfield of Edmond; and Amy Mayfield D.V.M. of Myrtle Beach, S.C., as well as many beloved extended family and friends.
Kenneth was preceded in death by his parents, Francis Estelle Karns and Kenneth Frank Wegner, Sr.; his step father Walter Clyde Karns; his father and mother-in-law M.B. Cooper and Lorene Cooper; his brother-in-law Neil Mayfield, and his nephew by marriage Justin Sanwick.
A viewing was 8 a.m to 8 p.m. November 1, at Hahn-Cook Street & Draper Funeral Home, 6600 Broadway Extension Oklahoma City, OK 73116. Family was present from 6 - 8 p.m. to greet family and friends.
Funeral Services will be 10 a.m. Saturday November 2, at Putnam City Christian Church, 4215 N. Grove Avenue Oklahoma City, OK 73122. Kenneth will be laid to rest in Rose Hill Burial Park following the funeral service.
In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in Kenneth’s name to the Fraternal Order of Police fund providing relief for officers suffering extreme illness or hardships.
