EDMOND —
Insurance Executive Glenn L. Barnes, 90, of Oklahoma City, Okla., was in the company of family and friends when he went home to His Lord on August 18, 2012. He was born September 12, 1921 in Oklahoma City. He graduated from Classen High School in 1939 and attended the University of Oklahoma and earned a Bachelor of Science degree from Oklahoma City University. He attended Temple University School of Medicine in Philadelphia. After serving four years in the Army Medical Corps during World War II, he began his insurance career with The Travelers Insurance Company in 1946 and formed his own agency in 1948, which was operated as Barnes Insurance Agency, Inc. He was highly respected in the industry by his peers and his loyal clients. He was a certified insurance counselor, certified professional insurance agent (life member) and N.A.S.D. broker dealer. His firm affiliated with C. L. Frates and Company in 1990 and continued as such until his retirement in 2010. Glenn was active in the First Christian Church serving as deacon, chairman of the deacons, member of stewardship and finance committee, and elder. He served on the board of Heritage Hall School, completing his term as chairman of the board. Glenn was a member of Kappa Alpha Order Social Fraternity, a founding member of the Classen High School Alumnae Association and served several years as recording secretary. He was a member of the Oklahoma City Golf & Country Club, the Petroleum Club, the Men’s Dinner Club, Revelers Club, Mayfair Club, and ROMEO’s (Retired Old Men Eating Out) Lunch Group. He was also a member of the Independent Insurance Agents of Greater Oklahoma City, and the American Legion, 40 & 8 Club Voiture. He was a 32nd Degree Mason and an India Temple Shriner. Glenn made friends with everyone he met and will be sorely missed.
Glenn was preceded in death by his beloved wife Oleta Keen Barnes; father Leslie Lee Barnes, mother Pearl B. Barnes, and sister Marjorie McClain Richards.
He is survived by his children, Anne (John) Oakes, Les (Susan) Dickson, and Jean (Cary) Sundlof; grandchildren, Tiffany Dickson, Stephanie (Juvenal) Rodriguez, Gale (Trina) Joslin, Amy (Ken) Elliott, Melissa (Mike) Huston, Alex Sundlof, and Madi Sundlof; his very dear friend Helen Bake, his niece Carolyn Sandusky, and many great-grandchildren.
Visitation will be Friday, August 24 from 9 a.m. to 9 p.m. at Smith & Kernke Funeral Home.
Services will be 1 p.m. Saturday, August 25, 2012 at First Christian Church, 36th & N. Walker with interment at Rose Hill Burial Park.
