Coleen Ruth Kinney

EDMOND —     The funeral service to celebrate the life of Coleen Ruth Kinney, 82, formerly of Edmond, Okla., will be 11 a.m. Monday, August 19, 2013 at Brown Cummings Funeral Home in Enid, Okla., with interment to follow at Waukomis Cemetery.

Family visitation will be 10 a.m. at Brown-Cummings Funeral Home, August 19 before the service.  Services are under the direction of Brown-Cummings.

Coleen died Thursday, August 15, 2013 at her home in Blue Rapids, Kan.  She was born January 17, 1931 to Laurence C. and Helen Ward in Enid, Okla.  Her father was a Montgomery Ward manager and his position caused the family to transfer to over twenty towns across the southern states during her childhood.

Coleen graduated from Kirksville High School in Missouri, attended N.E. Missouri State Teacher’s College and graduated from Emporia State Teacher’s College. She married Frank W. Kinney in 1952.  They lived in Texas, Colorado, and Kansas and had four children.

Coleen retired from the University of Oklahoma in 1993 where she held the position of manager of academic personnel and budget records in the Provost office.  She received the Staff Merit II Award in 1990.

Coleen was a huge Oklahoma history buff and was most proud of her family’s land obtained in the 1889 Oklahoma land run. She was an avid reader, loved OU football, and most of all adored all her grand and great-grandchildren. Since September 11, 2001, Coleen made hundreds of hand sewn star quilts which she sent to the wounded U.S. soldiers at Walter Reed National Military Medical Center.

She is survived by her children Jan Bergkamp and husband John of Blue Rapids, Kan., Kris Gant and husband Kent of Fort Scott, Kan., Susan Kidd and husband Danny of Edmond, Okla., son Frank Kinney and wife Peggie of Prosper, Texas; fourteen grandchildren, ten great-grandchildren; and brother Larry Ward of Florida.

She is preceded in death by her parents, infant brother Laurence C. Ward, Jr., and sister, Sue Pinegar of Garden City, Kan.

She will be missed so much for her love, sense of humor, wit, and laughter.

Condolences may be made to the family at Brown-Cummings.com.
