Ronald R. Sumner

EDMOND —     Ronald Randolph Sumner, 70, of Edmond, Okla., was born in Canadian, Texas, on April 18, 1943, the first of five children of Randy and Charlotte Sumner. He passed to eternal life on September 1, 2013 at home with members of his immediate family nearby.

    Ronald graduated from Canadian High School and attended West Texas State University, and earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Electrical Engineering from Texas Tech University in 1969.

    He was employed by Texas Electric Service Company in Big Spring and in Midland.

    During this time he met his future wife, the former Diana Schuette of Slaton; they were married in August 1973. The couple recently celebrated their 40th wedding anniversary. They each brought children to the marriage. Ron’s daughter Shannon became a sister to Diana’s sons Shannon and Shawn, and they were blessed with another son, Shea. Two of the children became known to the family as “Girl Shannon” and “Boy Shannon”. Extended family includes Tara Cox and her daughter, Joei Lynn.

    After employment with Union Oil of California in Midland, he was transferred to Edmond. He later founded MER Resources which was active in the oil and gas industry.

    He developed a strong interest in pheasants and other exotic birds, and founded Triple S Aviaries. This interest led him to the presidency of the World Pheasant Association (WPA), and he was invited by WPA – China, Beijing Normal University, and the China Ornithological Society to spend time in China sharing his expertise in the propagation of endangered pheasant species. In 2012 he collaborated with his son, Shea, in founding Mediterranean Imports which imports essential oils.

    Ron joined the Catholic Church in 1991 and became passionate about church ministry, and served as lead usher and Eucharistic minister, and was a member of the evangelization board, pastoral council, RCIA Core Team, and was a Knight of Columbus, Fourth Degree.

    He was preceded in death by his parents, sister Sharon Kay Sumner, and a brother, Dwight Sumner.

    Ron is survived by his wife, Diana; their four children, nine grandchildren and 11 great-grandchildren, and sisters Sandra Ermis and Joan Sumner.

    Visitation was 5-7 p.m. Wednesday, with a Wake Service beginning at 7 p.m. at Crawford Funeral Home, 610 NW 178th, Edmond.

    The Funeral Mass will be 11 a.m. Thursday, September 5, at St. John the Baptist Church, Boulevard and Ninth, Edmond.

    Memorial donations may be made out to the ministry of Father Showry, the Leopard Children of India, 1617 Walnut Cove Rd, Edmond, OK 73013.
