Tommy Wayne Conklin

EDMOND —     Tommy Wayne Conklin, 91, was born October 3, 1921, in Hereford, Texas, the second son and fifth of 10 children of Edith Maude and Clarence Leslie Conklin. He died Sunday, July 14, 2013 at the OU Medical Center of Edmond.

Tommy lived in Hereford until enlisting in the Air Force on January 5, 1942. During World War II Tommy served in the South Pacific including Australia, the Philippines, and New Guinea. During his time in the Air Force Tommy acquired the training and skills in mechanics that would serve as his vocation after the war, and even worked on General Douglas MacArthur’s plane several times.

After serving in the tropics and jungles of the South Pacific, Tommy was discharged in 1946 and returned to the panhandle of Texas, where he married Minnie Opal Elliston on January 31, 1947. Looking for “greener pastures,” the couple moved to Oklahoma City, and later to Edmond, Okla. where Tommy accepted a mechanics position at the Graham Ford dealership in Edmond.

Tommy worked for more than 30 years for the Ford dealerships in Edmond, and frequently worked on Edmond’s school buses, thus having a hand in the education of Edmond’s children.

His wife Opal passed away on April 25, 1973, and in February 1974, Tommy married Ruth Ann Gillispie. Tommy went to work for Oklahoma County in 1986, ultimately overseeing the mechanical work on the large machinery; he later retired in 1995. On May 8, 2004 Tommy’s second wife, Ruth Ann, passed away.

His was a life well-lived and he will be remembered often and fondly by all who knew him and enjoyed his love and friendship.

Tommy is survived by his son Tommy W. Conklin Jr. of Edmond; his step-son Michael Conklin and his daughter Crystal of Rogers, Ark., sisters Ida Mae Huckert and Nellie Haarmeyer of Hobbs, N.M., and his nephew Allen Conklin of Amarillo, Texas.

A service will be 2 p.m Friday, July 19 at Baggerley Funeral Home, Edmond.
