George Edgar Young


EDMOND —     George Edgar Young, 69, passed away April 15, 2014 at Mercy Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born November 25, 1944 to Marcel and Lucille Young in Orem, Utah.  He grew up there and graduated from Orem High School in 1963.  Afterwards he served a three year mission from 1964-1967 for The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints in the Franco Belgium mission, which included parts of France and Belgium. During this time he became proficient in the French language. On his return he attended Brigham Young University and received his bachelor’s degree in Geology in 1971.  He continued his education and received a Master’s Degree in Geology in 1975.

    Upon graduation he was hired by Conoco and worked in Casper, Wyo. While in Wyoming, George was introduced to Rebecca Christensen, daughter of Dall and LaDeena Christensen. They courted and in less than a year were engaged. On July 28, 1978 they were married in the Los Angeles Temple for time and all eternity.   George’s work later took them to Hobbs, N.M., Ventura, Calif. and Oklahoma City. He has lived in Edmond, Okla. for the past 27 years. 

    He retired last June from Linn Energy Oil and Gas Company. He was an active member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints.

    George was highly involved in the scouting program and he was well known for his love of dutch-oven cooking and camping with the scouts. He received his Wood Badge award, District Award of Merit, and the Silver Beaver Award, and served as a scout roundtable commissioner and unit commissioner.

    He is survived by his wife Rebecca and their four children, Christopher Young (Theresa) of Edmond, Jared Young of Gillette, Wyo., Elizabeth Miskin (Kory) of Brownsburg, Ind., and Rachel Young of Edmond. He also has seven grandchildren and one on the way.

    A memorial service will be 2:30 p.m. Saturday, April 19, 2014 at The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-Day Saints, 1351 E. 33rd in Edmond. A viewing will be held beforehand from 12:30-2 p.m. where those who would like to share this time with the family will be welcome. Services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Service, Edmond.
