William A. Eischeid

EDMOND —     Husband, father, and friend to many, William A. Eischeid (Bill) passed away peacefully at his home in the early morning hours of Monday, April 28 at the age of 87. He was born in Oklahoma City on May 25, 1926 to Henry and Anita (Zoeller) Eischeid.

Bill lived in several places growing up, including Oklahoma City, but his favorite was his grandmother’s home in Sacred Heart, Okla., where he lived as a child. He had many vivid fond memories of working on the farm in the summers.

Upon graduation from the original Putnam City High School in 1943, Bill enlisted in the U.S. Army Air Corp at the age of 17, whereby he went to gunnery school in Florida and became a tail gunner on a B-29. At wars’ end, Bill attended Oklahoma City University and the University of Oklahoma on the GI bill, earning a Bachelor’s degree in Journalism.

Soon after, Bill was employed by GMAC, working in several small towns in Oklahoma.

Bill married Betty Jane Burke on September 29, 1950 and from this marriage came three children, Steve, Sharon and Bill. Bill purchased the Pontiac agency on Broadway in Edmond in 1955 which he owned and operated for the next 20 years. He and Betty Jane made Edmond their home in 1960 where they worked and raised a family. After selling the dealership in 1974, he continued to operate small used car lots. Edmond was a small, tight-knit community in those times, and Bill sold lots of cars, made many friends and knew everyone in town. Bill and Betty Jane loved to entertain in their home, and many friends through the years could be seen standing at the bar in the kitchen laughing and telling stories on each other. In the late 1960s, the Eischeids and close family friends, the Howells, the Gibsons, the Bunsteins, and the Shepherds would travel to Grand Lake for weekend campouts. While everyone else was in tents, Bill or ‘Bunker’ as he was affectionately known, would have to have an air-conditioned camper.

Bill loved to play golf and hunt quail, both of which he did every chance he got, acquiring many good friends along the way. His group of guys played golf at Kickingbird Golf Course in Edmond, then moved to Oaktree upon its opening, and eventually moved back to Kickingbird.

Bill, ‘Big Daddy’, was a kind and loving husband, father and grandfather who always had the right thing to say, even if it did not seem like it to his children or grandchildren at the time. He was a member of St. John the Baptist Catholic Church and a faithful supporter of the Sacred Heart mission and church and the Subiaco Academy, Roman Catholic day and boarding school for boys run by the Order of Saint Benedict based in Subiaco, Ark.

Bill was preceded in death by his parents Henry and Anita Eischeid, his wife Betty Jane, who passed away in 1990, and his brother Jim Eischeid and sister Joan Newton.

He is survived by his son Steve and wife Robin of Edmond, daughter Sharon of Gunnison , Colo., and son Bill and wife Christi of Edmond. He is also survived by his grandchildren, Brian Eischeid, Meredith Smith and her husband Keith, Blair Eischeid, Andy Eischeid, Luke Eischeid, and Emma Eischeid.

The family would like to thank Mary LeGate and Bill Kelly who faithfully visited Big Daddy every day. We would also like to thank Brightstar and Hospice for their attentive care over the past few months.

The family would like to give a special thanks to Jack Goodson for bringing communion to him when he could no longer make it to church.

In lieu of flowers, the family would like to request donations be made to OMRF/Cancer Research or Saint John’s Elizabeth Ann Seton Catholic School.

A wake service will be 6:30 p.m., Friday, May 2, 2014 at Baggerley Funeral Home. Mass of Christian Burial will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, May 3, 2014 at St. John the Baptist Catholic Church with interment following at Memorial Park Cemetery.
