Carl Samuel Balaban

EDMOND —     Carl Samuel Balaban, 55, of Edmond, Okla., transferred to the church triumphant on January 28, 2014 following complications from cancer. He was born February 9, 1958 in Milwaukee, Wisc. to Alvin and Miriam (Douglas) Balaban.

Carl met and married Jennifer Currie on June 21, 1997. This union created one son, Christian Thomas. A fan of all sorts of sports, Carl always wanted to play one more game. Carl always tried to go the extra mile. He has been active in Lutheran churches all of his life, most recently at Lighthouse Lutheran, Edmond, where up to the last week of his life he carried out the ministry of baking communion bread and preparing communion for every Worship. He also enjoyed working with the youth and especially was involved in ministry projects including the Regional Food Bank and the City Rescue Mission. Carl is singularly responsible for adding calories to many who attended functions where he could be counted on to provide excellent food!

He is preceded in death by his parents, grandparents and a brother in law.

He is survived by his son, Christian Thomas Balaban of Edmond; his brothers Paul (Laura) of Pekin, Ill., Peter (Marilyn) of Edmond; his sister Susan Balaban Moellinger of Wichita, Kan.; his stepmother June Balaban of Edmond; nephews Douglas, David, RC and Samuel; niece Katy; niece Jennifer Moellinger Garrison (Sean) of Wichita; great nieces Natalie, Ashley, Alyssa; great nephews Nathan, Brody, Nicolaus; step-son Parker Randell and special friend Brenda Anderson.

A celebration of his life will be 10:30 a.m. Saturday, February 1 at Lighthouse Lutheran Church, 323 S. Boulevard, Edmond. In lieu of flowers, the family requests gifts in Carl’s honor be given to a college fund for his son Christian: the Christian Balaban Education Fund and mailed to Lighthouse Lutheran Church.
