Leta Mae Barrett

EDMOND —     Leta Mae (Johnson) Barrett,  90, of Clearwater, Kan., was carried home to be with her Lord Jesus, Friday, November 29, 2013.  She was born March 31, 1923 in Edmond, Okla., where she grew up.

    Leta Mae married Russel Nelson Barrett on August 4, 1956 in Wichita, Kan. She was a lifeguard during her early years. While still in college, she was recruited by Curtis Wright during WWII for her math and science skills, becoming one of the first women aeronautical engineers. She helped integrate the inertial guidance system in ICBM’s. In the early 2000s, after meeting an astronaut, she learned that some of her work was used in the space shuttle program. Leta was a small aircraft pilot, Camp Fire Girl Leader for 11years, she taught and tutored, and after retiring, taught the lost art of tatting. She frequently took food, including her homemade baked goods to co-workers, friends, and neighbors. She enjoyed knitting, embroidery, sewing, cooking, baking, and was an avid reader. She was a member of EHU and Eastern Star.

    Leta was a greatly accomplished woman in many areas of her life, but more importantly, she loved her family and friends, and above all, she loved her Lord Jesus Christ.

    Leta was preceded in death by her parents, Damon and Ida Lou Johnson, and sister-in-law, Donna (Knox) Johnson.

    She is survived by her husband, Russel; son, John (Anita) Barrett of Goddard; daughter, Char (Mark) Burke of Clearwater; brother, Ray Johnson of Owasso, Okla.; five grandchildren, and a great-granddaughter.

    Memorials may be made to American Macular Degeneration Foundation (AMDF), P.O. Box 515, Northampton, MA 01061-0515 and Clearwater Ambulance Service, P.O. Box 453, Clearwater, KS 67026.

    Visitation will be 9 a.m. - 8 p.m. Tuesday, with family present from 6-7:30 p.m. at Webb-Shinkle Mortuary.

    Services will be 2 p.m. Wednesday at First Christian Church, Clearwater, under the direction of Webb-Shinkle Mortuary.
