Gary Lee Niederschmidt

EDMOND —     Gary Lee Niederschmidt, 69, passed away on April 7, 2014 in Oklahoma City, Okla. He was born on May 17, 1944 in Lincoln, Neb., to Dorothy Jean and Arnold H. Niederschmidt.

    Gary attended school at Seward High and completed his GED while in the service.  He joined the U.S. Navy on February 11, 1963 and received his naval training at the 32nd Street Naval Station, San Diego, Calif. Gary served multiple tours in Vietnam. While in the service he was assigned to the USS Hassayampa. He retired from the Navy on April 30, 1983 after 20 years of service to his country.

    Gary returned to Nebraska and met the love of his life Marlene Mayland Brandhorst. They were married on October 18, 1988 and lived in Seward, Neb., where they worked together on her family farm. In 2003 Gary and Marlene decided to pack up everything and move to Oklahoma to be closer to their grandchildren.

    Gary was a fisherman at heart and would often look for opportunities to be near a riverbank.  He was a member of Victory Church in Oklahoma City.  He will be remembered for his love of family and country.

    Gary was preceded in death by his father and mother.

    Survivors include his wife, Marlene Neiderschmidt, of the home; sister Dana Hickey of Virginia; children Herman Niederschmidt of Hawaii his wife Melisa and their children Michael, Anthony, Philip and Kieristen; Dorothy Jean Linberg and her husband Gary of Minnesota and their children Christopher, Zachery, Brittney and Tiffany; step-daughter Tina King and husband Jim of Edmond, Okla. and their children Logan and Alexis;  great-grandchildren, and a host of other relatives and friends.

    A service will be 10 a.m. Thursday, April 10, 2014, at the Crawford Family Funeral Service, Edmond. Pastor Mary Lou Coppin will officiate. A military graveside service will follow at Ft. Sill National Cemetery, Elgin, Okla.
