EDMOND —     Fleta Jeraldine (Jerry) Campbell Vantine Horton Hendrix, 92, passed from this life on January 3, 2013 in Edmond, Okla. Jerry was born May 13, 1920 in Frederick, Okla. to Thomas and Anna Lois Carruth Campbell.

    The family moved to Chillicothe, Texas in 1921. She graduated from Chillicothe High School in 1937, and attended Central State College in Edmond from 1937 to 1941 where she earned a Bachelor of Science degree in Business and Home Economics. She returned to Chillicothe to teach business education at the high school from 1942-1943. She married U.S.M.C. Lt. Roy Lee Vantine, Quanah, Texas, on May 15, 1943. She taught and served as principal at Chillicothe through 1945. Upon his return from the War, the couple lived in Amarillo, Texas and Santa Barbara, Calif.

    Jerry taught social studies and business courses for the Ojai Valley Schools from 1955 to 1975. After retirement, Jerry and R.L. enjoyed traveling and went to many states, Europe, and the Holy Land. After Roy’s death on February 23, 1990, Jerry moved to Oklahoma City, and married Howard Horton in June 1993. After Howard’s death in 2000, she moved to Tealridge Manor in Edmond where she met and married Sam Hendrix on April 22, 2006.

    She was a member of the Mayfair Church of Christ and then Memorial Road Church of Christ. She spent time volunteering at Baptist Hospital and was active in her church until she was too ill. She loved to travel, read, and spend time with her family. She was a brilliant life-long learner. Jerry was a devout Christian who led a life of service to the Lord. She enjoyed being physically fit, walking three miles or more a day for over 20 years. She was an excellent seamstress and made treasured quilts for her grandchildren. Jerry lived an active life until debilitating illness prevented her from independence. She always had a positive outlook and never complained about her physical condition.         Jerry was preceded in death by her parents, her first husband, R. L. Vantine, her second husband, Howard Horton; one sister, Obera Calvin, and one brother, Wayne Campbell.

    She is survived by her husband, Sam Hendrix of Tealridge in Edmond; her sister Theda Brock; her two children, Mike and wife Pat Vantine of Kirkland, Wash. and Margo and husband Richard Glanville, Pawnee, Okla.;  four grandchildren: Kristin and husband Steven McMullin of Kirkland, Katie and husband Phillip Puzio of Kirkland, Erin and husband Ronny Brown of Pawnee and Matt and wife Aubrie Glanville of Oklahoma City, and seven great grandchildren: Laurel and Lily McMullin, Vivian and Sydney Puzio, Leah, Quinn, and Ian Brown, and one baby Glanville on the way.

    The celebration of Jerry’s life will be 10 a.m. Friday, January 11, 2013  at Matthews Funeral Home Chapel. Burial will be in Frederick at the Campbell family burial plot. Services have been entrusted to Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond.
