Hiram Keith Myers, Jr.

EDMOND —     We lost a champion.  Hiram Keith Myers, Jr., 81, of Edmond, Okla., born September 10, 1931 in Utica, Mo., passed from this life on July 9, 2013.

    At age 16 he began his four year service in the U. S. Navy.  He went on to earn degrees from Central Michigan University and a law degree from the University of Tulsa.  During his 35 year career as a trial lawyer, he practiced from his firms in Hollis and Altus, Okla., in courts across the nation, including the Supreme Court of the United States.  He also ran on the Democratic ticket as a candidate for the U. S. Congress.  During his life he served on the board of Western Oklahoma State College in Altus, the American Civil Liberties Union of Oklahoma and the Channing Unitarian Church in Edmond.Always an active advocate for his beliefs and a staunch supporter of those who were less able to defend themselves, he protested the death penalty and spoke up for justice in word and deed.

    Upon his retirement from the law profession, he began his career as an author and a member of the Dead Writers Society.  He published In Pursuit of the Speckled Gumball and Corkscrewed, two of three volumes of his memoirs.  His other books include Malachi’s Child, a historical novel of Mary, the mother of Jesus, and The Baptism of Vincent Scarlotti, a novel of murder and international intrigue.  He left many other works, as yet unpublished.

    He is survived by his bride of 35 years, Nancy Myers of Edmond, six children, seven grandchildren and two great grandchildren, Michelle Myers of Guthrie, Okla., Hiram Keith Myers, III, and wife Joanne of Lantana, Fla. and their son Mitch of Gainesville, Fla., Lori Richardson and husband Joe of Piedmont, Okla. and their sons, Jason and Jared of Kingfisher, Okla., Tammy Crenshaw and husband Larry of Oklahoma City, their sons William Hudson of Hollis and Matt Hudson of Oklahoma City, daughter April Crenshaw of Houston, Texas and her son Josh DeFlora, and their granddaughter Aubry of Oklahoma City, Dennis Myers and wife Angie of Broken Arrow, Okla. and Bryan Jernigan and wife Julie of Arlington, Va. and their daughter Peyton.  His only sibling, a sister, Shirley Roth, lives in Traverse City, Mich.  

    He was preceded in death by his parents, Hiram Keith and Helena May Sherman Myers and one granddaughter, Jennifer Crenshaw Branigan.

    Services will be 11 a.m. Saturday, July 13 at Channing Unitarian Church, 2800 W. 15th St., Edmond, OK 73012.

    In lieu of flowers, the family asks you to lend your support to any of the causes he loved, including the ACLU of Oklahoma or the Channing Unitarian Church of Edmond.
