William E. Garner

EDMOND —     William Elmer Garner, 80, of Edmond, Okla., passed away August 11, 2012. He was born October 9, 1931 in Pryor, Okla. to Ab and Essie Garner, the third of 11 children.  He graduated from Pryor High School in 1950, and worked in the Cotton Gin in Plano, Texas. He joined the U.S. Air Force in October 1952, specializing in auto mechanics. Bill was discharged in October 1956, and worked as a laundry truck driver, grocery clerk and an insurance sales man. He married Esta Ann Matheson, October 6, 1956 in Ardmore, Okla.   Bill rejoined the AF in 1961 and served out the remaining time working in various jobs with the transportation department, and was an instructor on hazardous cargo and cargo and household goods. During his military career he was stationed in Texas, Wyoming, Wisconsin, Oklahoma, Mississippi, Delaware, Georgia and Alaska with overseas tours in the Philippines, Japan, Pakistan and Okinawa. Upon retiring from the Air Force, Bill went to work for Civil Service with the US Army doing the same type of transportation business.  Bill owned and operated a small craft business in Alaska, with his wife, Ann, making wooden moose dolls and selling them throughout the state of Alaska. In July 1997 he retired from working and moved to Edmond.

    Bill’s  hobbies were traveling and sightseeing, square dancing, going to garage sales, fishing in Alaska for salmon and halibut. He was a member of The Good Sam’s Travel Club Organization, president of the Oklahoma at Large Chapter and former member of the Oklahoma Frontier Sam’s Chapter.

    Bill is survived by his daughter Terri Fors and her husband Ken Fors of  Edmond; son Mark Garner and his wife Natalie Garner of Spring, Texas; son Jerry Garner  of Nutley, New Jersey;  three grandchildren; seven great-grandchildren; sister Imogene Garner of Pryor, Okla.; brother Alvin Garner and wife Louise Garner of Pryor; sister Sue Burris of Pryor, Okla., Walter Garner of Kansas City, Mo., brother, Jean Burris, sister of  Pryor, Okla., Wilma Troyer, sister and husband Jerry Troyer, of  Hesston, Kan., John Garner, brother of Pryor; 12 nephews, nine nieces, many great nephews and nieces and cousins, Nora Bucker his companion and RV Co-Pilot. 

    He was preceded in death by Esta Ann Garner, wife, Ab Garner, father, Essie Garner, mother, and Matt Garner, brother.

    The family thanks the doctors and staff at the Edmond OU Medical Center for their untiring care, devotion, patience and tenderness toward Bill and the family.

    Funeral services for Bill will be 10 a.m. Wednesday, August 15, 2012 at Quail Springs Baptist Church with interment to follow at Gracelawn Cemetery in Edmond. Services are under the direction of Matthews Funeral Home and Cremation Service.
