Richard Earl Howie


EDMOND —     Richard Earl Howie (Dick), 83, went to heaven January 23, 2014 after fighting lung cancer. He was born April 3, 1930 in Ardmore, Okla. He graduated from Ardmore High in 1948, then entered the Air Force in 1951 and served for four years in England during the Korean War.

    Dick married his sweetheart, Verda Dene Saxon, on October 22, 1954. He attended the University of Arizona graduating with a degree in electrical engineering with High Distinction in 1961 and he was a member of Tau Beta Pi Honors Association.

    He moved his family back to Oklahoma to work for Phillips Petroleum for two years then back to his beloved Air Force to work at Tinker Air Force Base as an engineer for 29 years in Federal Civil Service.

    He is survived by his wife of 59 years, Verda Dene (Saxon) Howie; sister Pat Hargis; brother Mike Howie; sons Vince and Marc Howie, daughter Patricia Hopkins, their spouses; eight grandchildren; ten great grandchildren, and many nieces and nephews. Loving husband, devoted father, loving grandfather, big brother, uncle, friend, and hero to all, he will be missed dearly.

    Services will be 2 p.m., Monday, January 27 at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly Edmond, OK.
