Alice Maude Rose

EDMOND —     Alice (Marty) M. Rose of Edmond, Okla. passed away peacefully on Saturday, May 11, 2013, at the age of 93.

Marty was born on a farm near Idabel, Okla. to James D. and Lola E. (Stewart) Butler.  She grew up in Idabel during the depression, and in high school, she was elected homecoming queen as a senior.  Just before WWII, she met and married Howard C. Rose who was in the National Guard.  She endured many of the trials of military families during WWII – frequent moves, family separations and austere living conditions.  During her husband’s career as an officer in the Air Force, she lived in Germany, Japan, Taiwan, and numerous U.S. bases. In Washington, D.C., she served on the board of the Officers’ Wives Club where she worked with diplomats and congressmen, and she was one of the Arlington Ladies at the National Cemetery.  She spoke fluent Mandarin Chinese and taught English to wives of the Nationalist Chinese General Staff while her husband was the Command Attaché at the U.S. Embassy in Taiwan.

Following the death of her husband in an aircraft accident in Taiwan in 1971, she returned to Idabel where she lived until she moved to Edmond in 2006 to be near her children.  Marty was a strong Christian and a member of the Presby-terian Church.  In Idabel, she served as an Elder, and she continued attending church after moving to Edmond.  Marty was an elegant, strong-minded lady who was loving, generous, and intelligent.

She is survived by two sons: Lt. Col. (Ret) Howard C. Rose, Jr. and wife Carol L. Rose of Edmond, and Lt. Col. (Ret) David M. Rose and wife Jan Rose of OKC; two grandsons: Michael J. Rose and wife Wanda Brown of OKC, and Robert H. Rose and wife Kerry Rose of Frisco, Texas; and six great-grandchildren: Mackenzie Rose, Paris Rose, Madison Rose, Collin Rose, Caden Rose, and Ian Rose.

She was preceded in death by her parents, her siblings and her husband, Col. Howard C. Rose (USAF).

A memorial service will be 2 p.m., Friday, May 17 at 2801 Shortgrass Rd, Edmond in Coffee Creek. Burial will be at Ft. Sam Houston, San Antonio, TX.

Memorial donations may be made to Goodland Academy, P.O. Box 1056, Hugo, OK 74743-1056 or to the American Heart Association.
