Harvey Frank Gretenstein

EDMOND —     Harvey Frank Gretenstein, 63, of Edmond, Okla., and formerly of Savannah, Ga., husband of Judi Motley Gretenstein, died Wednesday February 13, 2013, at Oklahoma Heart Hospital in Oklahoma City, Okla.

Born in Savannah, Ga., he was the son of the late Dr. Lester Gretenstein and the late Frances Solomon Gretenstein. Harvey grew up with the congregation of Bnai Brith Jacob Synagogue and passed his joy of youth group memories to his daughter, Amy. He followed in his mother’s footsteps and attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of the Tau Epsilon Phi fraternity and an avid Bulldogs fan. He also discovered his love of computers.

After earning his associate degree, Harvey moved to Atlanta where he met his wife, Judi, on a company bowling league. His love of the game allowed him to travel the South with his team to compete for fun at an annual national tournament.

Harvey called Atlanta home for many years until relocating to North Richland Hills, Texas, then Edmond, Okla., in 1987 and 1996 respectively. He traveled frequently with his family, taking cruises all around North America and road tripping from state to state. His passion for technology led him to a 40-year career in systems administration, most recently retiring from American Farmers and Ranchers Insurance in 2012.

He is survived by his wife of 33 years, Judi Motley Gretenstein of Edmond; daughter Amy Gretenstein of Raleigh, N.C., one brother, Steven Gretenstein and his wife, Barb Shrut, of Coral Gables, Fla.; a niece, Julie Gretenstein and a nephew, Mark Gretenstein.

A graveside funeral service will be 3 p.m. Sunday February 17, 2013 at Bonaventure Cemetery, Savannah, conducted by Rabbi Avigdor Slatus. Arrangements by Gamble Funeral Service, Savannah.

Harvey lived with type 1 diabetes for more than 46 years and continuously supported the Juvenile Diabetes Research Foundation, whose primary focus is to find a cure. The family asks that in lieu of flowers, a donation in his name be made.
