Frances Lorene Orr

EDMOND —     Frances Lorene Orr, age 90, formerly of Edmond, Okla., died in her sleep early Tuesday, September 18, 2012 with her husband of 71 years by her side. She was born December 9, 1921, in Waxahacie, Texas to Arthur Clarence and Jewell Mowery; she was the oldest of six children. Her father was a Baptist minister and she spent her childhood in Texas and Oklahoma, and graduated high school in 1939 in Devol, Okla.

She entered Cameron College in Lawton, Okla. in the fall of 1940, where she met her future husband, Carl Orr. They were married on September 8, 1941 in Oklahoma City, Okla. They settled down in Lawton, Okla. until World War II, where they were stationed in Ft. Sumner, N.M. After the war, Carl and Frances relocated to Oklahoma City before moving to Edmond in 1964 where they raised their family.

After graduating from Central State College in Edmond in 1964, Frances began teaching elementary school. In 1968 she earned a Masters Degree in reading from Central State. She started her teaching career in Edmond in 1969 at Sunset Elementary. She was a teacher representative when Haskell Elementary was designed and built and started teaching at Haskell when it opened. She continued teaching there until she retired in 1985. She had hundreds of first and second grade students over the more than 20 years she taught, and loved each and every one of them; especially the ornery boys. She was a wonderful teacher who was passionate about teaching children to read.

As a young girl Francis learned to play the piano for her father’s church, and she continued to play the old hymns by memory after she lost her sight in 2001. Frances and Carl joined First Baptist Church of Edmond in 1964, where they were involved with the youth departments in the 70’s and Frances played the piano for her Sunday school class until 2007. She also played the piano for the church services at Grace Living Center from 1996 – 2002.

Frances and Carl moved in 2010 to League City Texas to be close to their daughter, Debbie.

Frances was preceded in death by her infant daughter, Carla Sue; and son Carl Jr., in 2003.

She is survived by her daughter Debbie and husband Terry Henderson, three grandchildren; four great-grandchildren and the fifth due in November, all of whom she loved dearly.

Funeral services were 10 a.m. September 24, 2012 at Forest Park East, in Webster, Texas.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to Baywind Village, 411 Alabama, League City, Texas 77573; phone 281-332-9588.  Attention: Frances Orr Memorial Pampering Fund, a fund established for the residents of Baywind Village Skilled Nursing Center who are unable to afford to be pampered by having a hairdresser fix their hair.
