EDMOND —
Barbara Circle Mitchell, 83, was born April 17, 1929 in Guthrie, Okla. to Harry and Jeanette (Simmons) Circle and passed away August 9, 2012 in Yukon, Okla.
Barbara graduated from Central High School in Oklahoma City and received BS and MAT degrees from Oklahoma City University. She met her husband Richard in high school and they were married in 1948.
Barbara served many roles in the Oklahoma City Public Schools between 1963 and 1980: classroom teacher, elementary science television teacher, coordinator of daytime programs for educational television and assistant director of middle schools. From 1980 to 1991, she was principal of Chisholm Elementary School in Edmond. Barbara was an ardent supporter of providing science class activities to elementary school students. She will be remembered by her Chisholm students and parents as “the lady in red” directing traffic in the parking lot during heavy rains. Her teachers will remember her as a principal who created a caring workplace, supported her teachers, and helped make teaching a joy.
Barbara and her husband Dick spent part of each year after their retirements on South Padre Island, Texas. She was an ardent supporter of AARP and thought of the Oklahoma AARP professional staff as her second family.
Barbara and Dick moved to Spanish Cove Retirement Village in 2005 where they made and enjoyed new friends. Barbara was a member of Oklahoma City First Christian Church between 1948 and 2009.
Barbara was preceded in death by her parents, Harry and Jeanette Simmons Circle of Waynoka and Oklahoma City; son Stephen (Steve) Mitchell; and daughter, Diane Mitchell Rogers.
She is survived by her husband of 64 years, Richard (Dick) Mitchell; daughter Linda; grandson Matthew; and great-grandson, Oryon.
A private service will be held on South Padre Island.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorials be made to the charity of your choice.
