David Newman Dean

EDMOND — David Newman Dean, 83, died Thursday, September 26th, 2013 at his home in Edmond, Okla. He was born January 17, 1930 in Cedar Rapids, Iowa to Ruth and Lloyd “Judd” Dean.

He was always there for his children, through both the good and the hard times. Dave was the scout master who would take them camping when no other fathers or grandfathers would go, and cared for baby Nick when Mary and Les returned to work.

Family and friends will remember his vast knowledge derived from his love of reading, dry sense of humor and his wonderful stories including riding in the baggage car of the troop train to visit his grandparents at Christmas during WWII, being taught by his doctor grandfather to drive 60 mph over gravel roads to take Doc Newman on his house calls, and assisting with a candlelight caesarian. His beloved grandmother, Gaga, was charged with keeping him out of trouble during his summers working on a ranch or railroad in South Dakota. He shared many escapades with his sister, and the one of the ones that Dave cherished the most was climbing the roofs at Cornell College. He was sworn into the Air Force by his father at age 18, and Dave’s four years in Japan added many rich experiences.

Dave graduated from Trinity University in San Antonio, Texas, taught school in Texas and worked as a surety bank underwriter for the St. Paul, Travelers and Transamerica Insurance Companies. Retirement was filled with volunteering, sharing wonderful travel adventures with his wife, and his passion for golf. As recently as this past July, he was able to walk 9 holes, playing in 100 degree heat and shot a 43!

His sister Nancy preceded him in death.

Dave is survived by his wife Pat, with whom he shared 53 years; son Andrew Dean and spouse Lynne Goldsman; daughter Mary Gay and spouse Les Gay; grandchildren, Ben, Sammi, and Emily Dean, and Nick Gay.

Memorials may be directed to Skyline Urban Ministry/Food Pantry, 701 NW 8th, Oklahoma City, OK 73102, or Mayfair Heights United Methodist Church/ Trustees Fund.

Services will be 2 p.m. Saturday, October 12, 2013 at Crawford Funeral Home, Edmond.
