Freida Lee Miller

EDMOND —     A celebration of the life of Freida Lee (High) Miller, 83, of Edmond, formerly of Oklahoma City, is scheduled for 10 a.m. Saturday at Matthews Funeral Home, 601 S. Kelly in Edmond.

Freida was born March 27, 1929, in Lamont. She died Dec. 8, 2012, in Oklahoma City.

Freida was active in Rancho Village Baptist Church and later Western Hills Baptist Church. She also was active in the Women’s Missionary Union and was the Girls Auxiliary leader at church and was a Brownie and Girl Scout leader as she led young girls into the role of young women.

A Gold Star Wife, Freida stayed at home while her husband Leroy Miller worked at Tinker Air Force Base before taking retirement at the age of 39 because of health issues caused by injuries he received fighting in World War II. She always made sure the family had a hot breakfast in the morning and dinner was always on the table at 4 p.m. sharp, and her children were expected to be there on time.

Freida made every birthday better than the last for her children because she had never had a birthday party as a child. The family celebrated her first birthday when she was 60, and she was surrounded by friends and family for the celebration.

She not only taught her daughter and son what a good work ethic was, she practiced it by going to work full-time for a local produce packing company when her husband had to retire. Later she was employed as a postal worker for 33 years retiring at the age of 73. While working in the post office she was the first one to speak out and organize the other workers if she thought an injustice was being done. More than once she went so far as to design T-shirts with catchy phrases urging the other workers to speak out against a wrong.

She was her daughter’s best friend, and her home was the one everyone wanted to come to and hang out. She and her daughter built a home in Edmond and they lived together for the past 11 years. She loved antiquing with her daughter and they filled their home with anything that was cobalt blue or had anything to do with Christmas. A collector of Santas, their home had Christmas decorations and collectibles out early and some things found their home on the shelves throughout the year. She loved to entertain, and each year during the holiday season, she and her daughter filled their home with friends, food and laughter at their annual open house.

Her son and his wife were very much in her life driving from Tulsa each week to visit her and take her to appointments for the past year.

She was preceded in death by her husband, Leroy Miller; and her parents, Levi and Blanche (Bunch) High; and her brother Samuel “Sammy” Ray High.

Survivors include her daughter, Patricia (Patty) Ann Miller; her son, Douglas Leroy Miller and his wife, Judy Ann Miller; her sister, Joan Smalley; three granddaughters, Stephanie Tara Adkins, Amanda Marylee Miller and Carly Alexandria Curtis; and three great-grandsons, Seth, Jaydon and Brody Adkins.

A viewing will be from 9 a.m. to 8 p.m. Friday at Matthews Funeral Home, Edmond.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Salvation Army or Wounded War Veterans.
